Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Dec. 20 to Dec. 21, 2009.
HOLLIS, C. Frank (Bronco) III, 65, passed away peacefully in his Varina home on December 19, 2009, surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his son, Cooper E. Hollis; his mother, Stella Hollis; his sister, Charlotte Deal Leake; and his father-in-law, Minor Martin. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Ambra Martin Hollis; his children, Yvonne (Vonnie) H. Pridemore (Frank) and Major Sloan L. Hollis (Amber); his father, Charles F. Hollis Jr.; his sister, Betty H. Mills (Bobby); his 10 grandchildren, Ariel Regensburg, Trey Taylor, Adair Taylor, Jakob Pridemore, Madelyn Hollis-Burnett, Morgan Hollis-Burnett, Samantha Burnett, and their mother, Jenny Burnett (Chris), Grace Hollis, Emma Hollis, and Lane Hollis; and his two great-grandchildren, Sean and Sophia Regensburg. He is also survived by his beloved mother-in-law, Lena Martin; and his brothers-in-law, Ray, Bailey, and Barry Martin; numerous nieces, nephews, and their families. Frank was an active member of Fort Lee Baptist Church, Varina Masonic Lodge 272, Virginia Claremont Lodge 177, and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. He was a retired member of the Carpenters Union Local 388 and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters. He rode the rodeo circuit in the United States and Canada for over 20 years winning 36 championships. He also entertained the crowd as a rodeo clown while bravely fighting bulls to protect other cowboys who may or may not have completed the eight second ride. He finished his lifelong dedication to the construction industry and the safety of its workers with Clancy & Theys Construction Company as the Virginia Division Safety Manager. He loved God, his family, life, friends, and telling jokes to all his friends, family, and the occasional stranger; although he never met a stranger. The family will receive friends from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday, December 21, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave. Funeral services will be held at Fort Lee Baptist Church, 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 22 with burial immediatly following at Washington Memorial Park. Ambra,Vonnie & Sloan:

I am so very sorry to hear of your loss... My Mom has been keeping me advised and said the service was a beautiful memorial to Frank's life and a testament to his devotion to friends and family. I will always remember playing "Go Fish" with him when I was about 7 years old. He asked me if I had a "10" and told him No but I had 2 "5's". He never laughed so hard in his life and I loved his laugh. You all have been in my thoughts and prayers and are very much loved! God's Peace! Betty Ann

Vonnie,
My father and his brother have always spoken highly of your parents. I knew and liked Bailey very much, but I regret never meeting your parents. Neither my family nor yours are strangers to the sudden loss of loved ones, so PLEASE rest when you can and remember to eat something!
Only my best wishes are with you during this, the most difficult of times.

To the Hollis family: We grew up together in Varina many years ago. Our mothers were best of friends, and I have heard of his life on the Rodeo circuit throughout the years. I was saddened to hear of his passing, but glad to hear of his love of life, family, and God. May the Lord surround you with his love through friends and family at this difficult time. Sincerely-

The first time that I met Bronco was over 20 years ago, and was impressed with the way that he could get people to listen what he had to say,3 years later we both went to work for the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, being on the road as we were for so many years we became close, we confided in how we both loved our children and family and our faith. He is gone but will never be forgotten.

Ambra,
I just wanted to let you know how sorry I am for your loss. My dad always spoke highly of Frank and when he visited with us and did daddy's funeral service back in June, I realized just how special he was. I wouldn't have gotten through that day without Frank. It meant so much to me knowing he actually knew my dad and cared about him. He made me laugh when I thought there was no laughter left in me and he cried with me when I thought I couldn't go on without my dad.

My friends still comment on how much they enjoyed daddy's service - they felt like it was personal, real and kept light-hearted.

He took care of preparing mom and dad's house for daddy to come home after his massive stroke - he widen doors and put in handicap bars to make daddy's life alittle easier. I will never forget him.

He was a very special person and I am thankful to have known him. He will be missed by all - take care and know that he is no longer suffering or hurting. He will be missed by so many!

FRANK,
What can I say, it is all said in this guess book. But he was so good to Harold, me and our family when Harold had his massive stroke in 2006 and giving us strangith right through the service he did for him, on June 3, 2009. He was a special Buddy to Harold and I new he would want him to do the service. People still tell me what a great job he did and how thy enjoyed his service. That was just Frank, a person I will alway love for the man he was.
May God be with all of you at this time

Ambra, I had been trying to get ahold of you and Lena. I am so sorry that Frank has lost his battle with cancer, but know he is in God's hands pain free
and keeping them laughing in heaven. He was so much larger than live and the
relationship you shared is evidenced by
all the friends and family who mourn with you. Sorry I cannot be there to
hug you but know I am there in spirit.
Please either you or lena call me. I know this is rough on her too. I don't pray often enough but this is one where
I can say honestly my prayers are with you all. love----Craig Ormand

My deepest sympaties to the Hollis Family.

I had the pleasure to serve on the Old Dominion chapter of the RMEF w/ Frank for several years. His outgoing personality and big heart were a big part of who we were as a Committee. His stories, jokes & zeal for enjoying life, & having a good time were great inspiration for all of us. It was a priviledge to have had Frank as a friend. He will be missed.

I read, in one of the other remarks that Frankie "was one of a kind" - and he surely was. He took being a cowboy a step further than the hat and boots, which anyone can don in a second. He took on the heart, the nature and the creed as well.
He loved to walk in , perch by your fire and tell "a couple" of stories.
He sold us a saddle one time and raised cain when we didn't dicker with him over the price - spoiled all his fun.
He loved Ambra and his family and always spoke so proudly of them. He was a christian gentleman. He was someone Willson and I are blessed to have known.

My prayers are with the family. I know Frank touched a lot of people in his time here on this earth. Just a few short months ago he eulogized my father, it was then over a couple of days I saw what a strong faith in the LORD Frank had, I know he misses the family but also he is happy to be home and no longer in pain.

To Amber and family,

I first met Frank in our little town of Tazewell, Va. in the early 70's when Diamond World Championship Rodeo came to town. He and my Dad became best of friends. At that time I was in High School and thought Frank was bigger than life. I loved to watch him dance in the ring as he and the old bull "Major Lewis" attempted to out do one another. His ability to fight bulls and ride saddle broncs was something to behold however all that was overshadowed by the man himself! He could tell more stories make you laugh harder and could always get the best of anyone that wanted to play along. My family and I always enjoyed you all coming to Tazewell and staying on our farm. May God Bless you all.

To the Hollis Family

Bronco will remain forever embeded in my memory and heart--- it was such a great thing to get to work with him over the years. he was one of those people you come accross just once in a life---- seems he was bigger then life----- such a loss for all of us. The wisdom and dedication he had for teaching and all that he did will remain alive, through his hundreds---even thousands of "students" over all those years. The United Brotherhood of Carpenters has lost a great educator.
May God Bless you all

My thoughts and prayers are with Ambra and the family. I have had the pleasure of working with and traveling with Bronco for more than 20 years. I have always considered Bronco my best friend. He loved his family more than most people could imagine. Whenever finished a class and were going to the airport, he always said, I can't wait to see my Indian Princess. Bronco is one of a kind and will be missed by all.

Bronco was one of a kind. He was always joking and laughing, but he took safety very seriously. Upon my return to Clancy & Theys, Bronco made me feel as though he had known me forever. He will be truly missed by all that ever had the opportunity to meet him. My deepest sympathy and condolences to all of you. He will live on forever.

My condolences go out to Ambra and all of the Hollis Family for the loss of Bronco. It has been an honor not just to work with Bronco but also to have him as a friend. I will greatly miss our talks...most especially his endless library of jokes and tales of an adventurous life. Anytime you spoke with Bronco you could tell he loved God, his family, his friends, his colleagues, and even those he didn’t personally know. He was a giant of a man with a heart just a big.

Bronco,
You made a difference my friend; in my life, the lives of those at Clancy & Theys, and everyone you touched.

Your legacy lives on...

I had the opportunity to spend time with Frank volunteering at several RMEF Functions, banquets and outdoor shows and he was a man that inspired me. Years ago seeing my passion for the RMEF he gave me some license plates with RMEF on them and I gave him my old ones for his ATV. I will miss him with his loud booming voice, his great jokes and his willingness to get in there and get-r-done! He was a cowboys Cowboy and one that touched the lives of many many people including me!

Ambra and family,
I was so sorry to read about Frank's passing in this morning's paper. Although I didn't know him well, I will never forget all those characters he portrayed so well in the VJWC Dinner Theater plays. May your memories comfort you. You are in my thoughts and prayers during this most difficult time.

We are so sorry to read of the passing of Frank. After fighting a long and hard battle with illness, he has now been called home to God. He is now with the friends and loved ones that preceeded him in death and will await all those that will follow. He surely will continue to entertain (and amaze) those he shares eternity with. We will cherish each and every memory of Frank, for there are many. I will never forget the pride he had when Cooper hit his first homerun playing youth league baseball. There is no greater love than a parent displays for his children. Frank had a "tough" exterior but he had a "soft" heart. We will miss him. Our heartfelt sympathies are extended to his family and many friends during this difficult time.

I met Bronco for the first time when he interviewed me for the secretary's job at Carpenters Local 388. After the interview he called to say that he had given the job to someone else. Three days later he called back and asked if I was still interested the other lady had decided not to leave her current employer. I have always joked with him that I was his second choice. I am very grateful for his second choice. He gave me the opportunity of a lifetime, to be of service to others. He was always a fair boss and Business Representative. He fought for workers rights in Virginia and their benefits are shared by union and non-workers alike. He was a great family man and never missed an opportunity to share his love and pride for his family. He had many gifts given by God and used them to be a witness to others. He will be missed.
