Carl Koenig Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Jan. 16, 2010.
KOENIG, Carl Joseph Sr., 75, of Bedford, died Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at his residence. Born February 9, 1934, in Springfield, Illinois, a son of the late Georgena Lester Koenig and Lawrence Koenig Sr., Carl was a communicant of Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church and a veteran having served in the U.S. Army. His career at St. Christopher's School served as his love and passion for 36 years, where he proudly devoted his life to the development of young men spiritually, academically, and athletically. He taught and coached hundreds of young men in the classrooms of the middle school and on the hardwood floors of Scott's Gym. His history classrooms were famous for a student's first speech and audio presentations that helped hone skills for both the upper school and later in life. He also loved giving his famous "German impersonations," tending his garden and challenging the students on their knowledge. In his coaching career, Carl was a basketball fundamentalist and purist, which served him well with over 400 victories and multiple prep league titles in his career. In his younger days, Carl was also a great basketball player at Randolph-Macon, where he accumulated over 1200 points and was captain of the basketball team. He was recently inducted to the Randolph-Macon Athletic Hall of Fame. Carl was currently serving as a page at the Bedford Central Library and coaching basketball at Liberty High School. In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence Koenig Jr.; and a sister, Rosemary Iocca. He is survived by three children, Becky Koenig Mason and her husband, Doug, of Rocky Mount, Va., Lon Koenig and his wife, Theresa, of Rhoadesville, Va. and Carl J. Koenig Jr. and his wife, Lynne, of Newtown, Pa.; eight grandchildren, Kristen Koenig, Kara Koenig, Kimberly Koenig, Emma Marie Koenig, Conlon Joseph Koenig, Mackenzie Rose Mason, Abby Elizabeth Mason and Luke Douglas Mason; and a special loved one, Barbara Norton. Memorial contributions may be made to Carl Koenig Scholarship Fund, St. Christopher's School, 711 Saint Christopher's Rd., Richmond, Va. 23226, and Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church, 1307 Oakwood St., Bedford, Va. 24523. A Mass of the Resurrection will be conducted at 10 a.m Monday, January 18, 2010 at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church, with Father Salvado Anonuevo, celebrant. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, January 17, 2010, with a Rosary service conducted 7:30 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Bedford, 586-3443. In addition to the funeral arrangements, a memorial service will be held at the historic chapel of St. Christopher's in the very near future. I wanted to take a moment and remember one of the most important figures in my life, Coach Koenig. I had the good fortune to be coached by him in the 1965-1966 basketball season at Mount Vernon High School. I lost touch with Coach in my adult life when I moved to Texas. I too became a high school coach and modeled myself after the coach who meant so much to me. I was never as kind or as thoughtful, but I tried. Several years ago, I thought that I would call and thank him for all that he did for me as a young man. Hoping to make him guess which former player was calling him, I said, "Coach, if I were to say Mount Vernon 49 Fort Hunt 47, who would you think of?" Without hesitation, 40 years after the fact, he said "Scott Alexander." I talked to him for quite a while and was better for it. I loved that man. I am sorry for your loss.

My Dear Becky,

I just found out about your loss and am so very sorry for you,Lon and CJ. Your Dad was probably the nicest and most decent human being I ever met. He was always so kind and patient to all of the neighborhood kids. I will forever remember sledding down Henri road and your Dad tirelessly carrying everybody's sleds back up so we could ride down again and again. I loved going to your house as a little girl and it was so obvious to everybody that you were the apple of your Daddy's eye.
Peace be with you my dear friend.

Carl was a lifetime teacher and coach. I'm the basketball coach at Northside High School and I have been fortunate to get to know Carl over the last eight years. His team has been in our tournament and we would always spend time between games talking about high school basketball. This last December at our tournament he said, "I'm still doing that stat chart you recommended." I remember thinking at the time that I hope I still want to keep learning and improving like Carl when I'm his age. He was a very nice man and an inspiration to me as a coach. I'll miss him.

Mr. Koenig was a great man. I think the reason he was such a good coach and teacher was that he possessed so many virtues. Mr. Koenig was a gardener who perennially brought out the best in people. With humility and grace, he was able to find joy in the habit of giving to others. He will be missed. His keen sense of humor and selflessness will be hard to forget.

Mr. Koenig was one of my favorite middle school teachers at St. Christopher's! I loved his sense of humor, and we shared many enlightening conversations outside of the classroom. In class he would tell me when my hearing aids were buzzing, and that added to the funny moments we shared. I wish his family all the best! :)

I just want to give my deepest condolences to Carl's family. I am so very sorry to hear about his passing. I feel blessed to be one of the many people who were touched by him. I had the pleasure of being his friend and teaching with him at St. Christopher's as well as being his neighbor on Henri. I have few words at this time except to say that his legacy will live on as he touched so many lives throughout his life. As I said on the St.Chris site I guess God needed another All-Star for his team. You will be missed my friend.

Coach Koenig was one of my earliest role models. He was my first coach. As a timid, skinny kid at Henrico High School in 1963, I was not a prime candidate for athletic success on the J.V. football team. He encouraged me, he motivated me, and he convinced me that I could make the team. His was a life of convincing young men that they could "make the team" which became not only a lesson of sports but a lesson of life. I will forever be grateful for the role he played in mine.

Carl Koenig was a special friend and mentor. It was my honor to serve under him as a teacher and coach. We worked together when he was the head of the middle school at St. Christopher's and on the basketball court as his JV coach and varsity assisitant. During those years I learn what it meant to be a teacher/coach. It was more than the fundamentals of basketball; it was the fundamentals of life. It was being honest, trusting, caring and supportive to young boys learning to grow up to be reposonsible giving and loving men of character. Carl Koenig will be missed but never forgotten. Carl "Well Done;God Bless". Dick Kemper

Coach Koenig is a legend, and his shoes will be ever difficult to fill. Not too many times that you find someone who touches the lives of every student and athlete in such a positive manner in the way Coach Koenig did over his years at St. Christopher's. Condolences go out to his family and the St. Christopher's Community.
