Dallas PIGGE Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Oct. 24, 2009.
PIGGE, Dallas B., passed peacefully in the early morning hours on Friday, October 23, 2009, following a brief illness. Mr. Pigge was a proud veteran of World War II, having served as a corporal in the Army's 29th Infantry Division. He entered France on the beach at Normandy in early July 1944 and served in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was wounded in action and captured by German soldiers on October 4, 1944 and remained a POW until the liberation in May 1945. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart medals, among others. Mr. Pigge grew up in Amelia County, Virginia, and returned there in 1979. He was a retired automobile mechanic. Mr. Pigge adored his daughters, Bev Sloan and Deborah Davis, who were the greatest joy of all his life. He is survived by them and their spouses, Bennie and Bob, respectively; as well as a granddaughter, Karen Vassar; and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by lifelong friends, Herb and Roberta Miller of Melbourne, Florida. Mr. Pigge was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Myrtle Poindexter Pigge. Mr. Pigge was blessed with many devoted friends and caregivers who made it possible for him to fulfill his lifelong wish to live at his home in spite of declining health. The family will receive visitors at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 25, at Calvary Baptist Church in Amelia, with funeral service at 3 p.m. Burial with full military honors will follow at Little Flock Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Amelia. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial gift to the American Cancer Society. V.Y. Scott Funeral Home in Amelia is assisting the family.
