Daniel Russell Bowers

BOWERS, Daniel Russell, 64, of N. Myrtle Beach, S.C., formerly of Mechanicsville, Va., passed away on October 28, 2010, at Agape Hospice in Conway, S.C. Born on April 9, 1946, in Omaha, Neb., he was the eldest son of the late Dr. Russell Vernon and Jeanne Matthews Bowers. Daniel was a loving and devoted son, husband and father. He was an active participant in the Boy Scouts of America, a loyal member of the Hanover Ruritan Club, Mechanicsville, Va., and South Strand Ruritan Club, Myrtle Beach, S.C. Mr. Bowers also proudly served in the Virginia Air National Guard for 23 years before retiring as a Master Sergeant in 1990. Dan was raised in Richmond where he attended Highland Springs High School and went on to graduate from Lynchburg College. He retired from Cliff Weil, Inc. in 1999 and spent the last 11 years with his wife in South Carolina. Before his illness, Dan loved to hunt, cook, play golf and garden. Mr. Bowers is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Elizabeth "Betty" Johnson Bowers of N. Myrtle Beach, S.C.; son Christopher R. Bowers of Ellicott City, Md.; daughter Amy E. Bowers of Mechanicsville, Va.; two brothers, John M. Bowers of Las Vegas, Nev., and Robert D. Bowers and wife, Malinda, of Chesterfield, Va.; two sisters, Pamela Atkinson and husband, Steve, of Richmond, Va.; and Martha Bowers of Las Vegas, Nev.; as well as many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, November 1, 2010, at Bennett Funeral Home, Mechanicsville, Va. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at Bennett Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Washington Memorial Park, Sandston, Va.
