George Earle Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Jan. 5, 2010.
EARLE, George William, 54, died suddenly at his home Sunday, January 3, 2010. He was born in Winchester, Virginia to Willie-Mae Earle and Gilbert Charles Earle, an adjuster for the General Adjustment Bureau. He married his wife, Jonnie, in 1979 becoming an immediate stepfather to her 11-year-old daughter Tracy. They were subsequently blessed with two sons, George in 1981 and Matthew in 1982. George always loved sports and was a star tennis player at Douglas Freeman High School. He remained active in athletics later as a coach with the Tuckahoe Little League, highlighted by an appearance in the 1981 Little League World Series with his team the Dodgers, with newborn son, George, looking on from the bleachers. He went on to coach both of his sons at the Tuckahoe Little League. After spending several years in the insurance industry, George fulfilled a lifelong desire to work for himself and opened his first Antique Booth at Tuckahoe Village Shopping Center. With his incredible talent for dealing with people, the business soon expanded to include two other locations. The business was ultimately consolidated under one roof to its current location at 2004 Staples Mill Road. Consistently garnering 'Best of Richmond' awards, West End Antiques Mall is renowned throughout the metro area for outstanding service, value and a long list of loyal customers. George and Jonnie, long standing members of Discovery United Methodist Church, gave generously of their time, love and talents. George most recently served on the Finance Committee. A man whose personality loomed even larger than his considerable physical stature, George will be remembered for his unique, dry humor, compassion and his love for selling antiques. Throughout his life, and to an even greater extent in recent years, he derived much joy from time spent with his wife, sons, daughter and grandsons fishing and attending football and baseball games. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Jonnie Whitson Earle; son, George Earle and wife, Amy; son, Matthew Earle; brother, G. Charles Earle and wife, Linda; brother, Thomas Earle and wife, Kim, all of Richmond; step-daughter, Tracy Michko and husband, Mike; and grandsons, Hunter, Sam, Ian and Tucker, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; and sister, Sandra Earle Scott and husband, Peter, of Lancaster, Virginia. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Rd. His funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, January 7, 2010 at Discovery United Methodist Church, 13000 Gayton Rd., Richmond, Va. 23233. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Discovery United Methodist Church for the Youth Mission program.

Dearest Jonnie and family, we were praying the night of the sirens and had hoped that a new grandbaby had arrived. I was reading this beautiful prayer from a dear friend of mine, Dee King when I got the call learning George's death. May this poem strengthen you and yours in the coming days:

Our Heavenly Father
We come to you now aware that you are all Holy and you alone reign over the entire universe.......nothing is to small or to big for you and you alone command the deepth and the length of all that will come to pass.
We believe that you hold the stars in the sky and at the same time hold us in the very palm of your hands.
We surrender our ways and look to you for the Truth that sets men free.
We come before you with fear, not afraid of you, but respecting all that you are and all that you will do.
We come before you knowing that we have your attention and that our hearts beat together. That the blood that runs through our vains has been washed with the Blood of the Lamb, making us whole and making us one in Christ Jesus.
Lord you said "when one of yours hurts, we all hurt"
Today many all over the world, in our neighborhood and in our church family hurt.
They don't understand
they don't know how much You love them
they have lost their spiritual sight
they stumble because of wrong choices
they hurt, because of unforgivness
they panic
they are paralized
they have forgotten to fall to their knees and pray
You are the lifter of souls
You are their redeemer
You are the wholeness for the lost and condeemed world
You are the Father of Nations and you care about each life and each need at this very moment.
With everything within us....
Let us draw on you and believe in you for all the answers to all the needs that are here before us today.
We trust you and we expect the report of the Lord........
The report is:
Our Father, who loves us
has redeemed us from the sins of this earth
He alone can save us
heal us
restore us in every manner
He alone, no other god...no other man.......can do this.
Our Hope is in you.
We thank you for the answers, and we thank you for the good reports.
We drink of the Water of the Living God today, and we will thirst no more.
Amen

It was our pleasure to know George through West End Antiques Mall. It was always nice to have a chat about the business of antiques, but we learned that if you really wanted to spark George's enthusiasm, just ask him about his family! Clearly, they were his focus! What a fine testament to both George and his family.
We will miss him and you are all in our thoughts,

So terribly saddened to learn of George's passing. Mom and I have always thought the world of George and the entire Earle family -- all of you are such very special and kind people.

I feel in many ways as if George served as a mentor to my Mother in the world of antiques and she has in turned passed that on to me. He is like the patriarch from which the passion has stemmed for so many people.

God Bless each of you.

All of our love, ?

My heart instantly grew the first time I met Mr. Earle. His enthusiasm for life was an instant comfort and a trait that he obviously passed along to his children. I can not recall ever meeting a man that openly and whole heatedly accepted and welcomed people the way Mr. Earle did. While my heart breaks with this sad news, I smile as I remember his lasting effect on the lives of those who knew him. I feel privileged and honored to have known such a positive individual. My strength goes out to the family and unfortunately words are not enough to convey my sympathies. Please know my thoughts and blessings embrace you.

January 5, 2010

Dear Johnie, George, Mathew, Tracy and your families,

My name is Bobby Dively and I am sorry we have never met. I was friends with George throughout high school and my college years. We hung out with Randy Fields, Scott Alloway, John Burton and Mark Wyatt and many other friends.
I grew up on Zell Lane just down the street from Randy. My mom, Mary Alice was very fond of George. She loved a photo of her standing between George and Randy. She was barely 5 ft. tall and thought it was funny how tiny she looked (and it is comical.)
Some of my favorite memories of George are hanging out at Chimborosa Park, fishing in a small john boat on the Chesapeake Bay by my Dad's house, being at Scott's house all together, a trip to Virginia Beach, George visiting at Radford College, and listening to the big guy laugh. I drank more than one beer with Geotge in those days and it was a blast being with him.
I have moved a lot through the years - to NC in 1979, Ohio in 1986, Williamsburg, VA in 2002 and back to NC in 2006. That is my sorry excuse for not knowing you all. I was heartened to know that Randy and George had hooked back up in recent time. Randy, Caren and the entire Fields family and my family are close and I had asked Randy to get George and Johnie down to Petersburg the next time we visited there. Randy called me Monday morning to give me the sad news.
George will always have a special place in my heart.
God bless your family
