George Turner Obituary

TURNER, George Daniel "Dan" Jr., 92, died Friday, June 11, 2010. He was the son of George Daniel and Sallie Fenner Turner and was the last surviving of their seven children. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Evelyn Parker Turner; son, Robert Thomas Turner, M.D., of Richmond; and many nieces and nephews. He was a native of Norfolk. During WWII, he served as an Infantry Liaison Officer and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, as well as the Purple Heart. He was later discharged from the U.S. Army Reserve with the Rank of Major. After the war, the Turner's moved to Richmond. Mr. Turner embarked on a career in industrial sales and retired after more than 40 years with Tidewater Supply Company. He was an active member of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church for 63 years, where he served in many capacities, including Elder, Deacon and member of the Chancel Choir. He was an avid bridge player and enjoyed vacationing in the Outer Banks. The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 15, at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1627 Monument Ave., with interment to follow in Hollywood Cemetery. The family thanks the staff of the Coronary Care Unit at Henrico Doctors' Hospital and his doctors. Memorial gifts may be made to the Grace Covenant Building Fund or the Westminster Canterbury Fellowship.
