BARGER, Helene Torgersen, passed away on January 14, 2010, in Charlottesville, Va., after a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Theodora Torgersen; and a grandson, John Conrad Jr. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Cyrus Phillip Barger; her children, Katherine B. Conrad and husband, John, of Richmond, Jennifer B. Ball and husband, Brian, of Richmond, Cyrus P. Barger Jr. and wife, Anne, of Charlottesville, Theodore N. Barger and wife, Amy, of Charlottesville. Survivors also include eight grandchildren, Anne Curran Conrad, Matthew Curtis Conrad, Katherine Curran Ball, Robert Brian Ball Jr., Cyrus Phillip Barger III, Elizabeth Niles Barger, Theodore Niles Barger Jr., and Emmett Daniel Barger. Born in 1932 to Theodore Torgersen and his wife Inga, Mrs. Barger grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. She met her husband while he was attending the United States Military Academy. They married after graduation. After his military service, they moved to Waynesboro, Va., where they lived and raised their children. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 18, 2010, at First Presbyterian Church, 11th Street and Wayne Avenue in Waynesboro. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Frontier Culture Foundation, P.O. Box 629, Staunton, Va. 24402, or Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, Va. 22911. McDow Funeral Home in Waynesboro is handling arrangements. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Barger family. Helene was a beautiful, gracious woman. She faught her illness with such strength and courage. I was honored and blessed to care for her and will miss our conversations. She truly touched my life. My deepest sympathy to all.
