Katherine Duggins Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Oct. 20, 2010.
DUGGINS, Katherine Whitehead, age 93, of Richmond, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2010. She was born April 1, 1917 in Courtland, Va., to Henry Luther Whitehead and Fannie Applewhite Whitehead. Her parents; and sisters, Bessie, Blanch and Frances preceded her in death. She leaves one son, Manfred Wyatt Duggins and his wife, Lockie; numerous nieces and nephews and their children, all of whom she loved dearly. After graduating high school, Kate moved to Richmond as a young woman and worked for General Foods, Thalhimers & Woolworth's before she embarked on a career at Home Beneficial Life Insurance Company that spanned more than 25 years. Upon retirement she obtained her real estate license and joined New Horizons Realty for a short period of time. Kate was so active and full of life; she couldn't just remain retired so at age 67 she started another career as office manager in The Byrd Center Leasing Office where she remained until age 87. As a lifelong active Methodist, Kate was a charter member of Walmsley Boulevard United Methodist Church and more recently was an active member and volunteer at Ramsey Memorial United Methodist Church. She always sought to help people and her volunteer endeavors were a testament to her commitment. Her many years of service included 25 years volunteering at Chippenham Hospital, also for the Richmond Senior Center and United Methodist Family Services. For over 30 years, Kate could be seen working at the polls at her neighborhood-voting precinct on Election Day. The family is grateful for the loving care extended by the staff of the Hospice Unit at Retreat Doctors' Hospital. Visitation will be held at Ramsey Memorial United Methodist Church on Friday, October 22, at 1 p.m. A celebration and remembrance of her life will be held at 2 p.m. at Ramsey Memorial. In lieu of flowers, memorial considerations may be made to Ramsey Memorial United Methodist Church, 5900 Hull Street Rd., Richmond Va. 23224.

To Manfred & Lockie, we offer this prayer for you and to your mother. Bud and Carol Myers
Almighty Father, eternal God, hear our prayers for Your daughter Katherine whom You have called from this life to Yourself. Grant her light, happiness, and peace. Let her pass in safety through the gates of death, and live forever with all Your saints in the light You promised to Abraham and to all his descendants in faith. Guard her from all harm and on that great day of resurrection and reward raise her up with all Your saints. Give her eternal life in Your kingdom.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Kate was vibrant, forthright and so thoughtful; always with a smile. Was blessed to meet her during her "retirement" years; a time when there was no one sharper about the office! As a Mom, she recollected summers at VA Beach hoping to sit on her rocker & that Manfred would be content in the safety/confines of the swimming pool, yet knowing her son had only the ocean surf on his mind. Katherine's generation is a lost breed, she let nothing go to waste. She was a strong, healthy soul, with obviously so much to live many decades for - attributed to Manfred and Lockie being an integral part of her giving world. She was gentle, yet would speak her mind, all packaged in a tiny frame, a lovely lady who did for others her entire life. She traveled to Europe "back in the day" and later enjoyed treks to Branson, MO, to take in the music & shows. Kate is already missed, yet there is peace rather than sorrow for me - knowing her loving spirit shines on. Heartfelt thoughts during this difficult time to Kate's caring family.

My deepest sympathy on the loss of your loving mother. In reading about her, she definitely was a most gracious, loving and giving person with a beautiful smile. I know now where you inherited your wonderful personality and your kindness to others.

Manfred,
We all know what a wonderful life “Auntie” had and she lived it to the fullest. She would always brighten up a room when she came in and made sure everyone got a hug. The memories I have from my childhood to adult life are cherished ones and she is a big part of those memories. Of the four sisters Auntie was the “Coolest” one, always liked to travel, party and help other people. Auntie will be dearly missed, but she is in a better place and at peace now.
Love, David
