ROBINS, Lora (con't) brought her immense satisfaction, benefiting among many others, the American Red Cross and the Central Virginia Food Bank, the Virginia Historical Society, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and the University of Richmond's Lora Robins Gallery of Design and Nature. But her passion and her greatest interest were focused on Richmond's Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. Together with its Executive Director, Frank Robinson, they envisioned and brought to life a dream that has transformed the Garden today into a destination of national renown. Over the decades, she and Claiborne were committed to sharing their good fortune with the community. Early on they created the Robins Foundation, a family charitable foundation to ensure the perpetuation of their philanthropic legacy. In addition, their personal lifelong support of Richmond organizations, individuals and Claiborne's alma mater, the University of Richmond, is evidenced by the many places and programs that today carry the Robins name. In 2004, Lora Robins was named the Outstanding Virginian of the Year by the General Assembly. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, E. Claiborne Robins; by her four siblings, John, Gene, Irvy and Ann; and by her grandson, Rob Haskell. She is survived by her children, Betty Robins Porter of Gainesville, Fla, E. Claiborne Robins Jr. and Ann Carol Marchant, both of Richmond; seven grandchildren: granddaughters, Juliet Shield-Taylor of Aspen, Colo., Robin Shield of Norwich, Vt., Sheryl Robins Nolt and Hartley Robins, both of Richmond; grandsons, Greg Robins and Mark Robins, of Richmond and Jon Mayer of Reno, Nev.; 12 great-grandchildren, Alexander and Juliet Tariot of Norwich, Vt., Charlotte, Claiborne and Rebecca Robins of Richmond, Audra and Noelle Shield-Taylor of Aspen, Colo., Jacob, Joey and Caleb Mayer of Reno, Nev., and Olivia Nolt and Taylor Derwin of Richmond; and numerous nieces and nephews from Texas. The family would especially like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Dr. Bill Wilkins, Frank Robinson and Bruce and Betty Heilman for their loving support, and to Jean Whitlock and Gwendolyn Hill for their devoted and unwavering caregiving of our Mother and Grandmother. The family will receive friends and colleagues on Friday, August 27, 2010 at 2 p.m. in the Library of the Education Building of Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. Immediately afterwards, there will be a memorial service at 3 p.m. in the auditorium of the Education Building. A reception will then follow in the Robins Visitors Center at Lewis Ginter. Interment will be private. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, any memorial contributions be made to Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, 1800 Lakeside Avenue, Richmond, VA 23228-4700, or online at www.lewisginter.org.
