PERDUE, Pattie

Burgess, died January 7, 2013, with her family at her side. She was born in Petersburg, Va., September 21, 1919, to Arthur Earl and Ella Potter Burgess, one of five children. She grew up in Bluefield, W.Va., and attended Bluefield College. She later transferred to Johns Hopkins University, where she was a member of the Johns Hopkins

University Play Shop Theater. A young woman ahead of her time, Pattie moved to New York City and worked at Macy's Department Store as a Comparison Shopper. She also hosted a radio show about the latest in home decorations and appliances. She willingly left the big city life behind when she married Philip Sutherland Perdue in Chester, Va., in 1942. Full of energy and a desire to help others, Pattie was active in the Chester Methodist Church Choir and the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Chesterfield County. She also filled her spare time with gardening, cotillion, real estate, neighborhood Bridge, and was an exceptional ballroom dancer with husband, Philip. Her home was often the gathering place for birthday clubs, Bridge clubs, supper clubs and unforgettable New Year's Eve parties. Her joy of life was contagious and her hospitality to family and friends was second-to-none. As she frequently said, "people are always more important than things!" She is survived by two daughters, Pattie Perdue Grubbs and her husband, Jerry, of South Boston, Va., Robin Perdue Wadkins, and her husband, Tom, of Richmond; and one son, Dr. Philip S. Perdue Jr. and his wife, Tammy, of Greenville, N.C. Mrs. Perdue was also blessed with seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Family will receive friends on Friday, January 11, 2013, between 4 and 7 p.m. at Bliley's-Central, 3801 Augusta Ave., Richmond, Va.
