Percy Omohundro Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Apr. 19 to Apr. 20, 2009.
OMOHUNDRO, Percy Charlton Jr. "Charley", 78, of Richmond, died Friday, April 17, 2009. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Nancy Lodor Omohundro; his daughter, Anne Omohundro Dunlap and her husband, Chris; his son, George Charlton Omohundro and his wife, Laura, and their two children, Calvin Charlton and Cara Marie. Charley grew up in Richmond's Ginter Park, attended V. P. I. and served a tour of duty with the U. S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was with Sydnor Hydro, Inc. for many years, until his retirement in 1996. Charley was an active member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church for more that 45 years. He held almost every leadership position in the congregation including Worship, Stewardship, Finance, Properties and Education Committees. He served multiple times on the Vestry and was both Junior and Senior Warden. Charley chaired the Every Member Canvass Committee three times, several Search Committees for Rectors and, in recent years, the St. Andrew's Guild. He served as a delegate both to the Annual Council of the Diocese of Virginia and the Region XI Council for many years and was twice elected to the Diocesan Executive Board and served on the Camps and Conferences Committee and on the Board of the Canterbury Book Shop. He was also Emmanuel's Cemetery Manager. Charley always went beyond what was asked of him in sharing his considerable gifts and talents. Charley died peacefully at Westminster-Canterbury Richmond, his home of nine years. A funeral service will be held at Emmanuel Church with burial in the church cemetery on Tuesday, April 21, at 11 a.m. There will also be a memorial service at Westminster Canterbury Richmond on Thursday, April 23, at 3 p.m. The family requests that any contributions be made to Emmanuel Church or the Westminster Canterbury Fellowship Foundation.

Dear Nancy,

I just read about Charley's passing. I am so sorry for your loss and hope that you find strength in your faith and many wonderful memories of him. P.K. and I think fondly of the days when I worked at Westminster-Canterbury, and when we would join togther with employees and spouses at social events. Charley was that needed spark to keep those events going!

You, Anne, and George are in our thoughts.

Dearest Nancy, Anne and George - I am thinking of you. Charley was one of the most beautiful individuals I've known. He leaves a wonderful legacy of love and compassion, as he touched the lives of so many.

With love and sympathy,

Tammy

Our Uncle Charley was a source of strength to our family during good times and bad. He was an inspiration and offered hope and stability to us at every turn. The consummate Episcopalian, we treasured our times with him, and I for one, will miss his clever wit, intelligence, hysterical and unending puns, and his deep love of us, his family.

Nancy, Anne, and George, It was with deep sorry we learned of Charley's passing. He typified the Virginia Gentleman, was a splendid example of a dedicated servant of Christ, a wise counselor, and a mentor to many of us who have held positions of leadership and responsibility in the Church. We will always remember him with great affection and thanksgiving for the privilege of having known him. We send our love, Bob, Terry, and Gwen Moffett
