Bertie was one of a kind and one of the smartest, deepest people I ever knew. I especially remember her laugh and the wit she showed when she was faced by human challengers and tried to say something true but inoffensive.
On seeing an ugly baby, e.g., she would say, "What a baby!!" or "Now, that's a baby."
When somebody like her dies, a library burns down.

Richard, Carole, and all the family, please accept my heartfelt condolences on the loss of your dear mother. I have great memories of a vivacious Bertie from my childhood years living right behind you and visiting Richard for play times. Bertie was also, as you know, a favorite neighborhood friend of my late mother, Bertha Emroch. You mom's passing signals the passing of an era; still, she left her special mark on the world through her good works and wonderful offspring, and will long be remembered. Thinking of you all tonight, wishing you peace,

Linda Staples

Dear Carole and family - what an absolutely lovely lady your mother was and a dear friend of my mother, Alby Chamberlain. My thoughts and prayers are with each of you - what a long, beautiful life she lived - cherish the memories - she was a beautiful person and will be missed. May God surround you with His comfort.
