McDANEL, Robert Lewis, 85, of Richmond, departed this life on September 21, 2010. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Ralph C. and Mildred L. McDanel. He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Jewell S. McDanel; daughter, Melissa Jarvis (Jerry) of Mechanicsville; son, Lewis McDanel (Vicki) of Crescent Springs, Ky.; grandson, Michael Jarvis and his fianc‚e, Stephanie Mask, both of Mechanicsville. Born in Baltimore on June 5, 1925, he had been a resident of Richmond since 1926. He received a B.A. from the University of Richmond in 1947 and a B.S. from VPI in 1950, leading to a career in architecture and employment at several local firms, including Ballou & Justice and Carneal & Johnston. He proudly served during WWII as a naval officer aboard the heavy cruiser USS Pensacola. A member of River Road Church, Baptist for over 50 years, he served on the Boards of Deacons and Administration, several committees and taught Sunday School. He was a member of the Richmond Jaycees. His honors included president, Richmond College Alumni Assoc. 1971; election to the ODK Honor Society (U of R) 1972; and president, Richmond Chapter of Torch Club Int'l. 1976-77, in which year the chapter earned #1 national ranking. Above all, he will be remembered for his love and dedication to family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Bon Secours Hospice or River Road Church, Baptist Endowment Fund. A funeral service will be held Saturday, September 25, 2010 at 1 p.m. at the River Road Church, Baptist Chapel. Interment will be private.
