Ruth Haake Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Nov. 13, 2010.
HAAKE, Ruth Jacqueline, 95, of Midlothian, died on November 7, 2010. Ruth was born in Buffalo, N.Y. of deaf mute parents in straightened circumstances. Determined to educate herself she started working at the age of 13. She earned a BS in physical education from Boston University and an RN from Beth Israel Hospital in New York City. As an RN she was a public health nurse. Her physical education background led her to work as equitation instructor. A strong believer in community service, she taught the Horse and Pony Division of the Caroline County 4H and was a volunteer at Johnston-Willis Hospital for 25 years. She is survived by her husband, Arthur, with whom she bonded in 1937 and married in 1941. Other survivors are a daughter, Barbara Jo Jett, a grandson, Jeremy Houdershelt, and a great-granddaughter, Hayley.
