Penny and I first met at Laurinburg Institute (LNII), and from there we both attended Kittrell College. When returning to VA for homecoming, my husband and I would go by Armstrong to say Hi to Coach Penny. Our family will miss him greatly.
The House By the Side of the Road
Let me live in a house by the side of the road,
Where the race of men go by -
The men who are good and the men who are bad,
As good and as bad as I.
I would not sit in the scorner's seat,
Or hurl the cynic's ban;
Let me live in a house by the side of the road
And be a friend to man.
I see from my house by the side of the road,
By the side of the highway of life,
The men who press with the ardor of hope,
The men who are faint with the strife.
But I turn not away from their smiles nor their tears -
Both parts of an infinite plan;
Let me live in my house by the side of the road
And be a friend to man.
I know there are brook-gladdened meadows ahead
And mountains of wearisome height;
And the road passes on through the long afternoon
And stretches away to the night.
But still I rejoice when the travelers rejoice,
And weep with the strangers that moan,
Nor live in my house by the side of the road
Like a man who dwells alone.
Let me live in my house by the side of the road
Where the race of men go by -
They are good, they are bad, they are weak, they are strong,
Wise, foolish - so am I.
Then why should I sit in the scorner's seat
Or hurl the cynic's ban?
Let me live in my house by the side of the road
And be a friend to man.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Tam and Mrs. Penny,
Please know that I am deeply saddened by the loss of Mr. Penny. Having known someone so kind for almost 40 years and living next door to them for 30 years, leaves an empty spot in my life. Just know that your loved one guided SO many students and his giving and sharing allowed them many opportunities that they may have never experienced without him. I remember the many students that he brought home to stay with your family and how he showed them what it takes raise a family and to be a good man. I know that they, too, hold special memories that will never be forgotten. God Bless you and give you strength during your time of sadness. Love you both!

To the family of Mr. Penny,
Mr. Penny brought kindness, a calm demeanor, and always a smile to many students and teachers in the Henrico Public School System when he came to substitute teach for many of us in recent years. We enjoyed our talks with him and it was not only a pleasure to know him, but an honor. My sympathies and my prayers are with you as you mourn a great loss. May God's peace remain with you all.

To the family of Walter Penny, Jr.:
Coach Penny was more than a coach to his girl's team. He instilled in us a mind to achieve excellence in what we do, and running suicides were one of his means to an end. :o) He required us to represent our team as ladies in wearing dresses to away games and mentored us in our daily lives. I am who I am in part, because of what he deposited in me. I know his absence from your lives will be a major adjustment, just because of who he was. My prayers are with you, as you adjust to his absence.

Coach you will be truly missed. You impacted a lot of our lives in ways you may not know. You were more than a coach and it was always about more than just basketball. It was Discipline, Team Work, Love for one another, Education, and for us to be all that we could be. I love you and I will keep your family in my prayers..........
One Last End To Practice..........
Our Father, Which Art In Heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come; thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and glory for ever and ever Amen
