William E. "Doc" Covert, 91, of Lynchburg, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014 at Heartland of Hillsboro.
He was born June 7, 1923 in Wamsley, the son of the late Harvey N. and Dora Neary Covert.
Doctor Covert was a 1954 graduate of The Ohio State University School of Veterinarian Medicine. He had served as health commissioner for the city of Chillicothe as well as Highland, Ross, Fayette and Pike counties. He served as a pilot during World War II as 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps flying C-47s, C-46s and B-24s. He was a twin engine "hump" pilot in China/Burma and India. He was a member of AmVets Post 61, life member of the VFW Post 9094, Ohio Veterinary Medical Association, past president of the Ohio Health Commissioner's Association and was the legislative liaison of PERI. He was a member of the Lynchburg United Methodist Church, a 60-year member of Peebles Masonic Lodge 581, and a member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Cincinnati and Highland Commandery 31 Knights Templar.
He is survived by two sons, David (Teresa) Covert of Lynchburg and Terry (Sandra) Covert of Winter Park, Fla.; six grandchildren, Brandy Lynn Miller, Marnie Rachelle Maxson, Zachary William, Nathaniel Larkin, James William and Courtney Caye Covert; eight great-grandchildren, Arden Grace, Levi Rowen, Silas William and AnnaCaris Sophia Miller, and Donni Rose, Ryan Joshua, Eli James and LilahGrace Covert; one sister, Ellen Welsh of Elyria; and one brother, Harvey Covert of Columbus.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie M. Covert, on Nov. 17, 2008; one sister, Ruth Turley; and one brother, Joseph Covert.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26 at the Davis-Turner Funeral Home in Lynchburg. The Rev. Harold Braley will officiate. Burial, with military honors presented by the Highland County Honor Guard, will follow in the Lynchburg Masonic Cemetery.
Friends may call Monday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Masonic services will be held at 7:45 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
