William Furnish Obituary

William Burke Furnish, 93, of Hillsboro, died Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at his home.

He was born July 24, 1921 in Soldier, Ky., the son of the late Emmett Arthur "Ott" Furnish and Berhilda Ethel Reeder Furnish.

Mr. Furnish retired as a professor at Southern State Community College and received the honorary title of professor emeritus. He had received his bachelor's of science degree from Morehead State University and his master's degree in education from the University of Cincinnati. Mr. Furnish taught high school at Marshall, Sinking Spring and Greenfield. He was a member, former deacon and Sunday school teacher of the Hillsboro First Baptist Church, a member of Raymond R. Stout American Legion Post 129, served as a Hillsboro City councilman, was a past member of the Southern State Community College Board of Trustees and was the head of the department of business at the Southern State College South Campus for several years. Mr. Furnish served as a U.S. Army Medic in the 68th Medical Regiment in Europe, where he was awarded five bronze stars during World War II.

He is survived by two sons, Gary (Bonnie) Furnish and Brent (Mary) Furnish of Hillsboro; four grandchildren, Carrie (Grant) Hutchinson of Sandy Hook, Ky., Christopher (Jackie) Furnish of Goshen, Brian (Carrie) Furnish of Liberty Township and Richard Furnish of Columbus; four great-grandchildren; and brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jack and Mary Jo Thompson of Morehead, Ky. and Shirley Spencer and Ben Cothern of Shalimar, Fla.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Zelma Mae Furnish, on Aug. 23, 2012; four brothers, Buster, Raymond, Ormal and James Furnish; and two sisters, Doris Barnett and Crystal Cundiff.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2 at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Dr. Gary Furnish will officiate. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. in the Bowen Chapel Cemetery in Olive Hill, Ky. Military honors will be presented by the Highland County Honor Guard and the Olive Hill American Legion Honor Guard.

Friends may call Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Furnish. He was one of my favorite teachers at Greenfield McClain. Prayers to the family.

So sorry for your loss! I was a student of his at Greenfield in 1973. I always thought very highly of Mr. Furnish.

So sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Furnish. I was a student of his at Sinking Spring School, graduating in 1960. He was such a great teacher and a very nice man. He taught me so much and I have used it for many years.
