Hansberry, Karen* - Formerly Of Graterford
Karen Hansberry, formerly of Graterford Karen (Hansell) Hansberry, originally of Graterford PA, died peacefully in her home in Whiteford MD on August 30, 2015, just weeks after celebrating her 73rd birthday. She died as she lived, in a house overflowing with people she loved. Mrs. H., aka Aunt Karen, aka Grammi spent her life loving and serving the Lord and her family. Everyone was instant family to Karen, her table always had room for one more person to share the meal and her home always had room for one more person to spend the night. She was a Foster Mom to many through Catholic Social Services over the course of 15 years, a Fresh Air Mom to many through the Intercity Fresh Air Program of Philadelphia over the course of nearly 10 years, and an Honorary Mom to all the neighborhood kids and all her children’s friends over the course of her entire life. She adored children and ran the J.O.Y. Daycare from her home, loving and caring for each child there as if they were her own. Karen was a constant volunteer at the various churches she attended during her lifetime, serving in the nursery, the kitchen, singing in the choir, running the Pioneer Girl Program, and coordinating many summer Vacation Bible School programs. When the last of her children graduated high school, Karen went to college for the first time. She graduated with Honors with a degree in Human Services at the age of 50. From there she became a skilled and loving caregiver in a group home setting for persons with mental and physical difficulties through the Indian Creek Foundation, later transitioning to become a dedicated and caring Drug & Alcohol Rehab Counselor through Penn Foundation. Karen loved gardening and vacations at the Jersey shore, but mostly she loved sharing her faith as a born-again Christian and showing her faith in all her ways. She is survived by her devoted children, son Scott Hansberry and his wife Jackie Auris of Conshohocken PA, daughter Tracy Bearsch and her husband Bobby of Whiteford MD, daughter Krista Cole and her husband Scott of Sterling, VA, and Maria Deluca and husband Hootie of Florida. She was the adored Grammi of Jessica DeWeese and spouse Rob, Megan Walker and spouse Jeremy, Samantha, Robert, Ellie, Hannah, Destiny, Mikel, and Alia. She was the beloved Great-Grammi of Adam Donald DeWeese. In heaven, she was swept into the waiting arms of her husband of more than 54 years, Donald Hansberry, who preceded her in death in 2011 and into the waiting arms of her two granddaughters, Erica and Grace, who preceded her in death as infants. Karen Arlene Hansberry leaves behind a legacy of love in the hundreds of lives she has touched. She is mourned greatly right now and she will be remembered gratefully forevermore. Family and friends will honor Karen’s life with a Funeral Service at the Delta Church of the Nazarene, 6610 Delta Road, Delta, PA 17314 on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at 11:30 A.M. with a viewing beginning at 11:00 A.M. Interment Darlington Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the Delta Church of the Nazarene’s Benevolence Fund, at the above address which is used exclusively to provide for those in immediate need of assistance in the community. Memory tributes may be sent to the family at www.evansfuneralchapel.com .
