Barbara Nolan Obituary
Barbara Ann (McBride) Nolan, age 67, of Springfield, PA (formerly Plymouth Township) died on December 5, 2012 at home surrounded by family, after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Barbara spent her childhood living on a farm in Valley Forge, PA, where her love of nature, animals, and conservation began. Before graduating from Misercordia Nursing School in 1965, she met her husband-to-be, Jim Nolan, a city boy from West Philadelphia. They married in 1966 and compromised on settling in the suburbs of Plymouth Township to raise their three children, John (Karen), Mary (Brian) Deppen, and Jim (Wendy). In 1989, Barbara completed the Philadelphia Zoo Docent Training Program and became an active member of the Philadelphia Zoo Docent Council for 23 years. As a docent, or volunteer teacher, she provided educational and informational services to zoo visitors and the community. Throughout her time at the zoo, she held a number of different positions, including Chairperson of the Horticultural Committee, Chairperson of the Artifacts Committee, Secretary of Docent Council on the Executive Board, Chairperson of the Senior Citizens Program, and participant in several Animal Behavior Programs. She also co-authored the Horticultural Green Book. Barbara enjoyed attending the annual Association of Zoo and Aquarium Docents (AZAD) meetings or Philadelphia Zoo sponsored trips, which sent her and Jim on adventures with the elephants in Arkansas, turtles in Costa Rica, and eagles in Alaska. One thing that excited Barbara more than the zoo was being a grandmother to her five special grandchildren: Brendan, Aidan, Abbey, Andrew, and Brynn. Barbara and Jim moved to Springfield, PA in 2009 to be closer to their children and grandchildren. She never resisted sharing her love of animals and nature with them; Tyler Arboretum, the Pennsylvania Farm Show and, of course, The Philadelphia Zoo were just a few of their favorites. Barbara spent her nursing career in maternity, delivery, and nursery. She worked at Sacred Heart Hospital and Chestnut Hill Hospital for many years. She retired in December of 2011 from Allere Corporation where she monitored high-risk pregnancies. It was Barbara's dear nursing friends who helped her family care for her during hospice care and make it possible to keep Barbara home during her final weeks. Barbara was predeceased by her son, Joseph, and parents, James and Mary (Carr) McBride. In addition to her loving husband, Jim, of 47 years, her three children and their spouses, and five grandchildren, she is survived by her brother, James (Jeanne) McBride, cousins Mary Ellen (John) Kutys and Rose (Mark) McKenzie. Barbara's family will receive friends and family at the Daylesford Abbey in Paoli, PA on Monday, December 10th at 9:30 AM, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery on December 11th at 10.30 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Philadelphia Zoo Docent Council, 3400 W. Girard Ave. Philadelphia, PA 19104.
