John Carlton Sargent Jr., 73, of King of Prussia, Pa., passed away on June 12, 2014, from complications of leukemia. He was surrounded by his beloved wife of 44 years, Sheila, and his family and friends at Einstein Hospital in East Norriton. John was born on Feb. 23, 1941, to the late John and Evelyn Sargent.|
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Brian and Joseph, both whom died in infancy.
John was born in Garden City, N.Y., and attended Chaminade High School. He then served in the Air Force as a radar specialist during the Vietnam War and was stationed in Oregon and Mississippi. He was honorably discharged in 1962. He attended the Marianist Seminary for a year. He graduated from the University of Dayton, where he received his bachelor's in engineering in 1966. He worked for Lockheed Martin Aerospace Division and was a re-entry systems engineer for 42 years. He was a primary engineer for several communication satellite programs, as well as a principle engineer of the GPS satellite. He retired from Lockheed in 2007.
John was very active with the Catholic Church and was a proud member of St. Augustine RC Church, Bridgeport, Pa. He was a proud member of Marriage Encounter and spent over 25 years conducting pre-Cana classes for engaged couples. He also visited the sick and homebound as an extraordinary minister. He was also a proud bagpiper and drum major for the Irish Thunder Pipe Band. He loved to practice playing the bagpipes at Valley Forge Park. He was a proud member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Notre Dame Division. He enjoyed being a judge for the International and Delaware Valley science fairs for many years. He and his wife traveled the world together and loved spending time with family and friends especially their grandchildren.
He was instilled with a love of ham radios and creating rockets. He built an addition on his home with his own hands; he knew how to fix anything. He was a loving husband, father and friend to all. He loved to tell stories and always had a joke to tell; selflessly sharing his life with everyone around him.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sheila. They would have celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary this July. He was also the proud father of six children, John Sargent and his wife, Jennifer, of Chicago; Bill and his wife, Alison, of Cincinnati, Ohio; Meghan and her husband, Kiron, of Melbourne, Fla.; Stephen and his wife, Brenda, of Covington, Ohio; Aileen of King of Prussia; and Daniel and his wife, Bridget, of Phoenixville. He was also the proud grandfather of six: Zachary, Dylan, Carter, Riley, Kaileigh and Jacob. He was also the uncle to many nieces and nephews.
He is survived by his sister, Nancy Anderson, a resident of Williamsburg, Va.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Monday, June 16, from 7-9 p.m. at the William A. Moore Funeral Home, 708 Fayette St., Conshohocken, PA 19428 or Tuesday from 9:30- 10:45 a.m. at St. Augustine RC Church, 464 Ford St., Bridgeport, PA 19405. Funeral Mass follows at 11 a.m. Interment at St. Augustine Cemetery, King of Prussia, Pa.
