Howard Daywalt Obituary

Howard Carter Daywalt Sr., age 68 of Conshohocken, a retired machinist, died on Thursday, Aug. 5, 2011.
He was born in West Conshohocken on Dec. 5, 1942 son of the late Carl and Elvie "Mae" Carter Daywalt. Carter was the beloved husband of Jean A. (Kolimaga) Daywalt for 46 years.
Carter was raised in West Conshohocken and attended West Conshohocken elementary. He graduated from the former Conshohocken High School Class of 1962.
While in high school, he played drums for the marching band as well as the "Blue Room Band".
He served his country in the U.S. Army, where he was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant. Carter worked as a machinist for 23 years at Synthane - Taylor, and landscaped with Bernard M. Brady for nine years. He enjoyed coaching and watching both little league baseball and youth football. He was a life member of Conshohocken Fire Company No. 2 and George Clay Fire Co.
While tirelessly serving his community in fire service, Carter received numerous awards and decorations such as Fireman of the Year and the Gold Badge. Carter was severely and permanently injured in the line of duty as a firefighter in 1993, battling a blaze at Elm St. and Colwell Ln. After his injury, he donated his time and talents to the American Heart Assoc., where he was awarded the "Volunteer of the Year" award. When not in service to his community, he loved watching the Eagles and gardening.
He is survived by three sons, Howard Carter Jr. of Roanoke, VA, Joseph Carl of Conshohocken and Matthew D. (Christine) of North Wales; a daughter, Victoria Anne (Stanley) Turtle of Collegeville; two brothers, Gerald of Oaks and Carl of Norristown; four grandchildren, Lisa Marie, Meghan Turtle, Alicia and Carter Daywalt; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, William C. Sr.
Relatives and friends may pay respects on Wednesday, Aug. 10 from 9-10:50 a.m. at the William A. Moore Funeral Home, 708 Fayette St., Conshohocken. A funeral service will commence in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Interment, St. Benedict Cemetery in Conshohocken. In lieu of flowers, donations in Carter's memory may be made to the Conshohocken Fire Co. No. 2 or the American Heart Association.
