Margarette Bodnar Obituary
Margaretta C. Bodnar (nee O'Donnell), 85, of Audubon Pa., passed away on June 26, 2014.
Surviving are her two sons, Albert Fitzgerald III and Thomas (Lee Anne) Fitzgerald; six grandchildren, Phillip (Maria), Virginia (Rick), Tommy, Laura (Erik), Michael and Morgan; seven great-grandchildren and over 60 nieces and nephews.
Margaretta was the youngest of six children of the late Neil & Anna O'Donnell. Anna emigrated from Ireland before WWI. Margaretta was born & raised in the Gesu Parish of Philadelphia and graduated from Hallahan High School in 1946. In her youth, she liked to dance & perform in variety shows. Then Margaretta taught ballroom dancing in the 1950s and won many dance contests. She was a past president of the Visitation Church Women's Guild. She adored her children and family.
She worked for the Marine Corps and met Sgt. Maj. John Bodnar in 1957. They married and spent 40 wonderful years together in love. They traveled a lot, especially cruises and enjoyed visiting Albert when he lived in The Netherlands. John predeceased her in 2011.
Her husband, John, was one of only a handful of Marines who fought WWII in Europe while serving in the OSS. He was captured, sentenced to be killed as a spy, escaped and became a POW until May 1945. He received the French Legion of Honor, the Silver Star along with many other medals. He and Margaretta had an audience with Pope John Paul II.
She was predeceased by five siblings, Anna (Sister Peter Claver IHM), Theresa (Jack) Redmond, Eleanor (Mike) Nophut, James (Dorothy) O'Donnell and Mary (Joe) Hayes.
Relatives and friends are invited to her Life Celebration Monday, June 30, 2014, from 7-9 p.m. at Boyd-Horrox at 200 W. Germantown Pike Norristown, PA 19401. 1-800-GIVNISH. There will be a second viewing at the church Tuesday, July 1, from 10-10:50 a.m. followed by her funeral Mass celebrated at 11 a.m. at Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 196 N. Trooper Rd., Norristown, PA 19403. Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
Donations may be sent to Camilla Hall, in honor of her late sister, Sister Peter Claver IHM, 1145 King Rd., Immaculata, PA 19345.
