William Morton McCain Obituary
William Morton of Lafayette Hill William Morton McCain, 92, a former principal at Norristown Area High School, passed away on July 25, 2014 at the Masonic Village of Lafayette Hill. Mr. McCain, a native of Chester, Delaware County, had held positions at Norristown Area High School since 1951, and retired in June of 1983. He worked as a Vocational education teacher, a mathematical instructor, counselor, and administrator. Some of his fondest memories were associated with his time as the sponsor for the class of 1961. He graduated from Millersville State Teachers College, now Millersville University with a bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Arts education. A member of the U.S. Air Force from 1943-1954, he served in the U.S. Counter-Intelligence Corps. in 1945-1946, and was the commanding officer of an Army Reserve Counter-Intelligence Department from 1949-1955. He held the rank of Major (Ret) in the U.S. Army reserve. Mr. McCain was a member of the National and State Education Associations, past treasurer and vice president of the Norristown Area Education Association, a member of Phi Delta Kappa and Iota Lambda Sigma, member of the National and PA Association of Secondary School Principals, a member of the Norristown and Montgomery County Retired Teachers Association, and a member of the Montgomery County Principals and supervisors association. Civic activities included being a life member and treasurer of the Historical society of Montgomery County, a member of the Board of Directors of Triangle Club of Montgomery County, past President of Valley Forge High Twelve Club 305, life member Chester Lodge #236 F.+A.M., past Sovereign Prince 16 degrees past Most Wise Master 18 degrees Benjamin Franklin Consistory 32 degrees, Valley of Philadelphia. He was past president and life member of the Children's Aid Society of Montgomery County and the vice-president and life member of the Hall of Champions Assn. for Norristown High. At the sixth annual induction ceremony at the Norristown Area High School Hall of Fame, Mr. McCain, who retired as principal in June 1983, received a special award as one of the founders of the Hall of Champion Association, and his service and dedication to that group. Mr. McCain was a member of the Jeffersonville Presbyterian Church serving as an elder, archivist, a past president of the Board of Deacons, and a teacher of an adult Sunday School Class. He is survived by his two sons William Morton Jr. and his wife Deirdre of Rosemont PA, and James Augustus of Howell NJ, two grandchildren Sean and Katherine, and three great grandchildren. A Graveside service will be held at Riverside Cemetery of West Norritown, at the convenience and privacy of the McCain family.
