Gerome "Gerry" Castagnetto

Gerome "Gerry" Castagnetto passed away Wednesday afternoon, March 27, at the age of 89.
He was born Nov. 9, 1923 in Vallejo to Columbus and Anastasia Castagnetto. Gerome attended St. Vincent's High School in Vallejo and graduated in 1941. He then attended St. Mary's College in Moraga on a football scholarship. He joined the Army Air Force during WWII. After the war, he enrolled and later graduated from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland.
Gerome married Doris Noonan of Vallejo on May 26, 1946. They lived in Vallejo from 1946-1949; Carmel from 1949-1952; the San Francisco Bay Area from 1952-55, returned to the Monterey Peninsula in 1955 and resided there until 1961 when they moved to Salinas.
He taught art at Sunset Middle School in Carmel, was the set designer for display windows at the Emporium in San Francisco, did commercial art for Milprint in San Francisco, until returning to the Monterey Peninsula to work at Growers Container in Salinas in 1955. Gerry was at Growers Container, St. Regis Paper, Hoerner-Waldorf Corporation, Champion Container, Stone Container and Smurfit-Stone Container all at the same facility until he retired in 1990. He then formed Impulse Graphics Design to do freelance commercial art. Gerry also taught commercial art classes at Hartnell College. He was an active member of the Valley Art Guild for many years.
Gerry enjoyed painting, reading, listening to Giants games on the radio while he worked, going to San Francisco 49er games, attending art gallery showings, entering paintings in county fairs, spending time watching his grandchildren's and great grandchildren's sporting events, playing the guitar, attending live theatre, watching movies and dining out.
Gerome was preceded in death by his wife, Doris of 61 years in 2007.
He is survived by his son, Paul (Paddy Jo) Castagnetto of Salinas; daughter, Karen (Ken) Martin of Oregon City, OR; grandchildren, Lisa (Seth) Cole of Pleasanton, Michael (Rebecca) Castagnetto of Salinas, Jonathan Castagnetto of San Jose, Victor Otto of Corvallis, OR, and great-grandchildren, Joshua, Katelyn and Noah Cole and Sophia, Dominic, and Analisa Castagnetto.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 3, from 3 to 6 p.m., at the Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.
Funeral service will be held Thursday, April 4, at 1 p.m., at the Struve and Laporte Chapel. Entombment will follow at San Carlos Cemetery, Monterey.
