Merrell ""Doc"" Hales

Merrell "Doc" Hales was a resident of Vallejo. Doc was born in Brigham City, Utah to Richard and Elaine Hales. He graduated from Box Elder High School in 1957 and joined the Navy, serving for 12 years.
He spent a year under the ice in Anarctica aboard the U.S.S. Kamehameha, a nuclear submarine launched out of Mare Island in 1965. Doc was discharged in Nov. of 1967 and moved to Vallejo for his remaining years. He married Kathryn L. "Kay" Moore. He began bartending at the Vallejo Moose Lodge #468, which became a 40 year career. He retired in June 2011.
Doc had many friend and many stories from his years in the Moose Lodge. He had an uncanny memory for names and loved crossword puzzles and Sudoku. He was smart and could be very funny. He will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Kay; his parents, and his step-father, Don C. Horn.
Doc is survived by brothers, Dennis (Eleanor), Thomas Horn, Randall Horn, and sisters, Sandra Cannon (Steve) and Jocarrel Jackson (Gordon).
Doc was cremated and his ashes scattered at sea with full military honors on June 18, 2013.
A celebration of Doc's life will be held at the Vallejo Moose Lodge, 337 Nebraska St., on July 7 at 2 p.m.
