Oliver H. Gardner

Aug. 31, 1920 – July 22, 2013
Oliver H. Gardner, 92, of Walnut Creek passed away after a brief illness on July 22. He was born in Williamson County, Tennessee. Oliver worked for Western Can Company in San Francisco for 33 years and eight months before he retired July 31, 1980. He also served in the US Army, 102nd Infantry Division and received an Honorable Discharge on Dec. 14, 1945. 
He was a member of Loyal Order of the Moose for 55 years, a member of Legion of the Moose who received his Fellowship Degree in 1999, a life member of American Legion Post 550, a member of St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church, and a member of Golden Age Travelers Club of San Francisco. He took trips to many destinations, including Fiji, Australia, China, Alaska and the Panama Canal. He has traveled extensively throughout the United States and has returned to his home state of Tennessee numerous times. His favorite place was Branson, Missouri. In addition to traveling, Oliver's other hobbies included cooking and golfing. He was also a fan of the San Francisco Giants and the San Francisco 49ers. 
Oliver is preceded in death by his former wife of 23 years, Sophie Gardner of Vallejo; and his former wife of 18 years, Catherine Gardner of San Francisco. 
He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Mrs. Virginia Gardner of Walnut Creek; his stepdaughters, Mrs. Dolores Bowden of Modesto, Mrs. Pauline Herring of Mansfield, TX, Mrs. Nancy Landy of Danville, and Mrs. Jan Soule of Alameda; stepsons, Mr. Paul Slown of Sacramento and Mr. John Lonegran of Dublin; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren. He also has 10 nieces and seven nephews residing in Tennessee. 
Memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 31 at 11 a.m., at Wiggins-Knipp Funeral Home, 524 Capitol St., Vallejo followed by a repast at Vallejo Moose Lodge, 337 Nebraska St., Vallejo.
