Oct. 25, 1930 - July 22, 2013
Walt, 82, beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, teacher, mentor and irrepressible lover of life, passed from this life on July 22. He had lived in Benicia since 2004.
Born Oct. 25, 1930 in Huntington, IN, Walt attended Indiana University
, earned a BA from Western Washington University, Bellingham, and earned an MA from Fresno State University.
His greatest love was for his best friend and wife of 61 years, Virginia, and his family: Susan and John Bunch, Benicia; Ann and Randy Wise, Paradise; Tom Vater, Vallejo, and his seven grandchildren. As his family grew over the years, his heart and love expanded to welcome everyone. He is remembered by them with love, joy and much humor.
Walt spent a lifetime giving of himself and his talents, always adding value wherever he was. He felt it was important to leave things better than you found them. A born mentor and teacher, his career as a dedicated and respected California educator included six years in the classroom and 32 years as principal of elementary and middle schools.
He delighted in mentoring his children and grandchildren, and many other young people, at construction job sites, as he pursued a beloved hobby of personal building projects and volunteered with Habitat For Humanity.
Among his many contributions to the communities he called home, Walt co-founded the Calaveras County Chapter of Habitat For Humanity and was instrumental in obtaining grant funds for the building of a new library there as well.
A long-time Episcopalian, he offered much of himself to his faith communities. He will be sadly missed at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where he served and mentored in many capacities.
All are welcome to a celebration of thanksgiving at St. Paul's, located on the corner of First and "J" Sts. in Benicia, on Saturday, Aug 3, at 11 a.m.
Those wishing to remember Walt with a memorial tribute may donate funds to any of his favorite charities: the Kaeli DeWeese Legacy for Youth at St. Paul's, the Calaveras County Chapter of Habitat For Humanity, the
, and Kaiser Hospice.
