Gerald "Rocky" Wayne Gieffels, 58, passed away Sunday, March 10, in San Diego, CA following a long illness. All who knew him will remember his gentle ways and awesome sense of humor. He kept his sense of humor to the very end. He was born to John Phillip Gieffels and Merrill Grace Menendez in Vallejo. He lived in Benicia and graduated from Benicia High School in 1973. He joined the Navy after High School and served aboard the USS Flint during the Vietnam War. Following his service to his Country, he worked at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo until 1996. He transferred to San Diego in 1997 and worked for NAV-FAC until he retired last year.
Rocky was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, John Phillip Gieffels and Timothy Leroy Gieffels. He is survived by his wife, Christine Ames-Gieffels; daughters, Magan Gieffels and Jessica Gieffels; grandchildren, Vanessa Carrasco, Brandon Carrasco, Sydney Bingham and Christian Bingham; brother, Monte Gieffels; sisters, Bonnie Black, Linda Ellis, Vicki Wratislaw and Sherrie Schultz; sister-in-law, Sachie Gieffels; nephews, Jack Gieffels, Walter Gieffels, James Black, Robert Black, Ryker Schultz and Matt Wratislaw; nieces, Melissa Martin, Mayuko Dietrich, Kendra Schultz, Heather Wratislaw and Brooke Wratislaw, and numerous other family members.
Services will be held with Full Military Honors at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, 1800 Cabrillo Memorial Drive, San Diego, CA 92106 on Monday, April 15, at 2:30 p.m.
