Paul Ray Smith of Vallejo, CA., passed away peacefully in Salt Lake City, UT on Jan. 15.
He was born on Dec. 7, 1927 in Atlas, IL, the son of the late Owen and Martha Smith. He married his sweetheart Lorraine Peterson in Clark County, Nevada on June 24,1954.
Paul served honorably in the U.S Navy from 1945-1954, having sailed on the USS Piedmont (AD-17), and the USS Consolation (AH-15). While aboard the Consolation, Paul deployed to Korea and served aboard the first Hospital Ship to participate in the Korean War. His Naval medals include, the WWII Victory Medal, UN Service Medal, and Korean Service Medal with 10 engagement stars, Navy Occupation Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, and the American Campaign Medal. Following his naval service, Paul continued working for the government, retiring in 1986 from Mare Island Naval Shipyard Vallejo, CA.
Paul and his wife loved to travel, camp, gold mine, golf, and fish. He always loved an excuse for a good old fashion get together. He always enjoyed time with his friends, family and neighbors and was loved by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine; son, Mark Smith; daughter, Pam Larsen (David Larsen); his brother, Jack Smith (Pauline); six grandchildren, Shaunna Beck (Jason Beck), Christina Orme (Pete Orme), Adam Smith (Emma Smith), Desiree, Benjamin and Jackson Smith; five great grandchildren, Savannah, Nellie, Tessa Orme, and Brody and Liam Beck. He was also the favorite uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Viewing services will be held this Saturday, Jan. 19, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., at Holladay Cottonwood Mortuary 4670 So. Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah 84117.
