Long time Napa resident Raymond Nunes died peacefully Wednesday surrounded by his family in Angels Camp.
Ray was one of 13 children born to Antonio and Mary Nunes of Benicia. He graduated from Benicia High School in 1950 and received his AA degree from Napa JC.
What defines our dad is family, country and community service. By age 16 he had started his military career which would span 43 years, including honorable discharges from Navy, Army, National Guard and Air Force. He had boots on ground in Korea, Vietnam, Bay of Pigs, Desert Storm and Desert Shield. He retired from his civilian job as a guided missile inspector at Concord Naval Weapons Station. He flew missions around the world with the 708 Military Airlift Squadron.
He gave of his time to his church and was a member of NSGW parlor #162, Elks Lodge, VFW, IDES Portuguese Society and volunteered at Queen of the Valley Hospital for many years.
In 1952 he married Kay, moved to Napa and raised his family. In 2012 he moved to Angels Camp to be with his daughters.
Ray was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Kay Nunes, and survived by his three daughters, Becky Wilkins of Sonora CA., Pam (David) Cooper of Columbia, CA., and Cindy Rochelle of Angels Camp. His grandchildren, Melanie Gomez (Erick), Wesley Wilkins, LaRae Bozsik (Carl), and Andrea Rochelle. Great grandchildren, Gabriella and Raymond Gomez and baby Bozsik on the way.
A military graveside service will be held Saturday, Nov. 30 at 12 p.m., Tulocay Cemetery, 411 Coombsville Rd., Napa followed by a celebration of his life at the Elks Lodge, 2840 Soscol Ave. Napa.
