Bernice Thomas Notice
Jan. 11, 1924 - April 12, 2013
Bernice Jackson and Daniel A. Thomas married on March 1, 1942 in New Orleans, LA. They moved to Vallejo, CA, in 1943 with one child after her husband was stationed at the Oakland Army Base. Bernice and Daniel celebrated 72 years of marriage just prior to her passing in April. She will be remembered for the great love she had for God, her husband and family. Out of all of her accomplishments, the one that she was most proud of was being a mother. Not only did she raise 12 children of her own, but extended her love and raised many other children as well, in the city of Vallejo. Mother Bernice Thomas loved the Lord and the Church. She was baptized and filled with the Holy Ghost in 1946 under the leadership of Elder Cornelius. In 1954, she and her husband moved their membership to the Rehoboth COGIC and served faithfully for more than 50 years uner the leadership of Elder Peerless Jefferson. They later moved their membership to the Ephesian COGIC, Berkeley, CA, pastored by Bishop Robert R. Carr and served there for about 12 years. Then, in 2010, the Lord moved the family back to Vallejo, CA, to serve in ministry at the Rescue Mission COGIC, pastored by Supt. Doctor Yaahn G. Hunter, where she faithfully served until her death. Mother Thomas has many accomplishments and credits to her success as a Christian and Community Leader. She was the first Young Women's Christian Council President at Rehoboth COGIC; the chairperson of the Pastor's Appreciation; Sunshine Band President; Sunday School Teacher; Youth Department President; Pastor's Aid President; Chairperson of the Missionary Circle; Sewing Circle President; the Richmond District YWCC President; District Secretary and Finance Board Member; State Deaconess Board President; State Women's Convention Recording Secretary; Finance Board Member; and a member of the Local, District and State Mother's Boards. Mother Thomas served in the Women's Department of the Greater Northern California First Jurisdiction under Mother E. Devers, Mother G.E. Smith and Mother R. Hunt. She also served under the leadership of Mother E. Person, Greater Northern California 2nd Jurisdiction's Women's Department. As a young Mother, and Homemaker, she actively participated in promoting School Bond Measures to improve the educational system in the Vallejo School District; as well as, participated in many community based organizations to improve the employment and  living conditions of the underprivileged and disenfranchised members of our community. Her greatest legacy is that of giving. Mother Bernice Thomas is truly a Holy Woman of God and she will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched.
