Jack Flynn, 93, passed away Saturday, Feb. 16. Born in Oakland, CA., he graduated from St. Mary's College High School in Berkeley.
After high school, he went to work at the Oakland Tribune as a Circulation Manager while attending St. Mary's College.
Jack married Bernice Corrigan in 1941 and shortly thereafter moved to Vallejo to become a Circulation Manager for the Times Herald where he remained for over twenty years. Shortly after arriving in Vallejo, he enlisted in the US Navy following the outbreak of WWII.
In 1964, he founded Colonial Chapels Funeral Home and was actively involved in daily operations until January, 2013. He was very proud that Colonial Chapels is the oldest continually operated family funeral home in Vallejo.
Jack was very involved in the American Legion, in which he was a 67 year member. He served the Legion as a many-time Commander of Vallejo Post 104, 5th District Commander, 1st Area Commander, Department of California Commander, and National Vice-Commander. After serving in those offices, he was instrumental in starting the Legionnaires Insurance Trust, a national insurance program for American Legion members. He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Trust from 1966 until his death.
Jack was also active in various other Veteran organizations. He was a 63 year member and Past Chef de Gare of the Forty and Eight Solano Voiture 395 and a proud Irish-Catholic member of the Jewish War Veterans.
A life member of the Vallejo Elks Lodge 559, Jack was also active in many community and civic organizations including the Vallejo Moose Lodge, the Improved Order of Redmen, Knights of Columbus, Native Sons of the Golden West, and Sons of Italy. He was a past Chairman of the City of Vallejo Planning Commission, Past Chairman of Solano Red Cross Disaster Committee, Past President of Solano Meals on Wheels, Past Chairman of the Annual Solano County Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon, and a member of the Vallejo and American Canyon Chambers of Commerce. He was also a generous supporter of many community and church groups including the Vallejo PAL, the Solano County Deputy Sherriff's Association, and various Filipino-American philanthropic organizations.
After the death of his first wife, he married Eleanor Power in 1991 and melded her family into his.
Jack was preceded in death by first wife, Bernice; second wife, Eleanor; son, Joseph; and brothers, Alfred, Edward, and Frank.
He is survived by son, John (Merilee) Flynn; stepson, Jim (Laurie) Power; step-daughters, Michaela Dunkin, Patti (Douglas) Keener, Katie (Jim) Babcock, and Nora O'Neill; and sisters, Mary Flynn and Elizabeth Carter. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with American Legion Services to be held on Friday at 6:30 p.m., followed by a recitation of the Holy Rosary, all at Colonial Chapels, 1000 Redwood St., Vallejo. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m., at St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church, Vallejo. Burial with military honors will follow at All Souls Catholic Cemetery.
