June 4, 1948 - July 27, 2018 Vallejo Joseph "Joe" Avellar, passed away on Friday, July 27, at his home in Vallejo, with his family by his side, following a more then four year battle with cancer. Joe was born in Napa to Philbert and Lola Avellar and was a resident of Vallejo for 65 years. He was a graduate of St. Basil's Elementary School, St. Vincent's High School and Golden Gate University in San Francisco. He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Basil the Great Catholic Church. He worked for National Can Corporation from 1968-1983. In 1983 he became a small business owner of Sim Co Products in Vallejo, a packaging and shipping business. As a business owner, Joe made many long-lasting friendships and business associates along the way. Joe enjoyed and excelled at baseball and fast pitch GVRD softball in Vallejo. He played for teams like Terry's, Demmon Insurance, Golden Bubble and the Volano Club. He was inducted into both the St. Vincent's and GVRD Hall of Fame. Joe enjoyed watching the SF Giants and was a member of the Northern California Left Handed Golfers Association. Joe enjoyed vacationing with his family to Feather River and having family Thanksgiving over at the coast. He especially enjoyed the weekends or just a drive to Bodega Bay with his wife Pat. He also enjoyed attending concerts and musicals where he would listen to his favorite music by the Beach Boys, Boz Scaggs, Smokey Robinson and the musical Jersey Boys. Joe is predeceased by his father, Philbert Avellar, and his sister, Penny Christensen. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Pat Avellar of Vallejo; daughters, Kristy (David) Avellar Currie, Jody (Gary) Avellar Ballerini; brothers, Phil Avellar of Napa, Steve Avellar of Brentwood; grandchildren, Jacob Currie, Danielle Currie and Hope Ballerini. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 9, with the Rosary and Vigil service to begin at 7 p.m., at Twin Chapels Mortuary, 1100 Tennessee St., Vallejo. Funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 10, at St. Basil the Great Catholic Church, 1200 Tuolumne St., Vallejo. Inurnment will be private.
