Joseph Espero Dacanay Notice
June 8, 1923 - July 13, 2013
Joseph Espero Dacanay had his loving family at his bedside when he was peacefully called to heaven on July 13, at the age of 90. He was born on June 8, 1923, in the city of La Paz, in the province of Tarlac, Philippines.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1949, where he served in Korea from 1950 to 1951 as a field radio repairman.
Joe married Remedios de Vera of Bautista, Pangasinan, Philippines in 1953. They were married for 52 years before her death in 2005. Joe is survived by his five children, Ruby Caragan, Joe Dacanay, Elizabeth Ramirez, Cathy Dacanay-Rader and June Brown. Additionally, he is survived by 18 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Francisca Cargo; and sister-in-law, Leonida de Vera.
Joe's second career was at Mare Island Naval Shipyard as a journeyman electronics mechanic. He earned three associate degrees from Solano Community College and retired from the shipyard with a total of 42 years of federal service.
He was a traveler, philosopher, writer, jack of all trades, loved ballroom dancing, and took great pleasure in watching "fake" wrestling. He had a wonderful sense of humor throughout his life and, as a gift to his children, wrote many stories about his experiences.
The last seven years of his life were peacefully spent at the Veterans Home in Yountville.
Viewing and reception to be held at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home, Fairfield, on Tuesday, July 23, at 6 p.m. Rosary at 7 p.m. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Fairfield on Wednesday, July 24, at 11 a.m., Interment to follow at Fairmont Memorial Park, Fairfield.
