Dec. 18, 1927 - Jan. 4, 2018 Vallejo Robert G. Thurber, 90, passed away peacefully Thursday in a local hospital. He was born in Yountville and been a Vallejo resident since he was three years old. He joined the Marine Corps when he was 16 years old and served in three wars and retired after over 20 years of service, many of those on the USS Midway. He was a devout catholic and longtime member of St. Vincent's Parish. He graduated from San Francisco State and following his military career Bob had a 17 year career working for the Internal Revenue Service before retiring again in 1986. Soon after he opened Thurber's Tax Service and operated that until 2015. Bob had a passion for national politics, coached Joe DiMaggio baseball in Vallejo for several years, enjoyed rooting for the Giants, 49ers and Warriors, traveling to Japan with his wife, quoting Shakespeare and spending time with his family. He is survived by Catharine Seiko Thurber, his wife of 64 years; sons, John (Tracy), Don (Rochelle) and David (Susan) Thurber; "adopted son", Ken Groen; grandchildren, Robby (Stevie), Drew, Tara, Jack and Julyann; and his great grandchildren, Marley, Maylea and Macyn Thurber. He was preceded in death by his sister, June Stone, and his brothers, Larry and Darryl Thurber. Visitation will be after 5 p.m., Thursday followed by vigil services at 7 p.m., at Passalacqua Funeral Chapel. Mass of Christian burial will be held 11 a.m., Friday at St. Vincent's Church, followed by burial with full military honors at All Souls Cemetery. Family prefers donations to Catholic Charities.
