July 31, 1986 - March 11, 2013
Steven R. Buchanan, 26, lost his battle with bipolar disorder on March 11. He had struggled with his illness for six frustrating and confusing years, always trying to maintain a positive attitude even as his world was turning upside down.
Steve was born in Fairfield and raised in Benicia, attending Benicia schools and graduating from Benicia High School in 2004.
He loved the outdoors, fishing, camping, swimming, and traveling. Steve's sparkling blue eyes and electric smile lit up any room he entered. He was always looking for a good time and the chance to make people laugh. He was loving, generous, and passionate in all he did.
Steve played sports of all kinds as a youth, focusing on wrestling and handball in high school. Handball, however was his love. In his freshman year at Chico State, Steve was the National Collegiate Handball Champion in singles and, along with his brother Zack, combined to win the Doubles Championship.
Steve is survived by his loving mother and father, Debbie and Jeff Buchanan; his beloved brother, Zack; uncles, Louie (Wendy) Navellier, Rick (Jeri) Case and Randy Case, Aaron (Shawn) Buchanan; paternal grandmother, Eve Navellier; maternal grandfather, C.R. Case; and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his cousin, Cory Case.
A memorial service will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, at The Gateway Church, 1315 Military West with Pastor Jerry Pollard officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in Steve's name may be made to NAMI, or to USHA 2333 N. Tucson Blvd., Tucson, AZ 85716.
