Vernon was born July 22, 1925 in Mill Valley to parents Henry Machado Fostine and Marian Reese and died Jan. 2, 2013 at Marin General Hospital at age 87.
Vernon and his ancestors have been residents of Mill Valley since the late 19th century where they owned land. His father Henry was also born in Mill Valley in 1896. His mother was born in the Azores Islands of Portugal in about 1899.
Vernon was proud to have served in the U.S. Navy for 23 years from 1943 to 1966, based at Mare Island and served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Midway as a boiler room engineer.
From 1967 through 1998, he was chief engineer at Mills College in Oakland, taking the valuable skills learned in the U.S. Navy and applying them to keeping Mills College systems going for more than 30 years. Before he finally retired from Mills College in 1998, the College wrote: "You have defined the Mills College Engineers for the past 30 years … and outwork staff many times younger."
Vernon is survived by his son, Vernon E Fostine. Open services will be conducted at Mt. Tamalpais Funeral Home in San Rafael, starting at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10. Burial will be conducted immediately afterward at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in San Rafael, where he will be buried with his late wife Lillian Ann Fostine.
He will be missed by all who knew him.
