1918 - 2014 |
Dec. 10, 1918 - Feb. 23, 2014
Daniel A. Thomas and his late wife Bernice Jackson married on March 1, 1941 in New Orleans, LA. They moved to Vallejo, in 1943 with one child after Daniel was stationed at the Oakland Army Base. Daniel had a career as a Machinist and retired from Mare Island Naval Ship Yard after 44 years of service. Daniel and Bernice celebrated 72 years of marriage prior to his passing in February. He will be remembered for the great love he had for God, his wife and family. Out of all of his accomplishments, the one that he was most proud of was being a husband and a father. Not only did he work and take care of his family, but extended his love towards others throughout the city of Vallejo. Elder Daniel A. Thomas loved the Lord and the Church. He was baptized and filled with the Holy Ghost in 1946 under the leadership of the late Elder Cornelius. In 1954, he and his wife moved their membership to the Rehoboth COGIC and served faithfully for more than 50 years under the leadership of late Elder Peerless Jefferson. They later moved their membership to the Ephesian COGIC, Berkeley, pastored by Bishop Robert R. Carr. In 2010, the Lord moved the family back to Vallejo, and Elder Thomas attended the Rescue Mission COGIC under the watch-care of Supt. Doctor Yaahn G. Hunter until his death. Elder Daniel A. Thomas, Sr. has many accomplishments and credits to his life as a Christian and Community Leader. He was the first Sunday School Superintendent at Rehoboth COGIC, a Trustee Board Member, and a Deacon, and Finance Manager of the Church. Elder Thomas was a key member who helped build the ministry and assisted in fundraisers that paid off the church and burning of the mortgage. He also served as the Assistant Pastor of the Rehoboth COGIC for more than 50 years; District Financial Secretary of the Richmond District under the late Bishop Ennis; and he served on the Ordination Board in the Men's Department of the Greater Northern California First Jurisdiction under Bishop B.R. Stewart.
Elder Thomas was a father who had a special love and compassion for children and young single mothers. Through his many philanthropic efforts, Elder Thomas would purchase Thanksgiving and Christmas care baskets containing food and toys for the families of young single mothers that he would meet at Safeway and Raley's super markets. He continued this love of giving until the age of 93 when he could no longer do so.
Elder Daniel A. Thomas, Sr. was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife of 72 years, Mother Bernice Thomas. He leaves to treasure his legacy, daughters, Rosemary Ruffin (Leonard), Tacoma, WA, Betty Thomas, Vallejo, CA, Urselena Edmunds, Foster City, CA, predeceased, Barbara McCollough, Vallejo, CA, Joyce Thomas, Winchester, CA, Jewell Johnson (John), Hayward, CA, and Diana Thomas, Vallejo, CA; sons, Daniel Thomas, Jr., Vallejo, CA, John Thomas (JoAnn), Antioch, CA, Phillip Thomas Sr. (Maria), Fairfield, CA, Elliott Thomas, Vallejo, CA, and Ellis Thomas, Vallejo, CA; siblings, Urselena Williams and Utilda Farria of New Orleans, LA; and one sister-in-law, Mayola Praylow, New Orleans, LA; 34 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren, and 25 great great-grandchildren.
