Mary J. Berntsen

1924 - 2014 Notice Condolences
July 18, 1924 - March 11, 2014

Longtime Vallejo resident Mary Julia Weiland Berntsen passed away peacefully with family by her side. She is survived by her brother, Dr. Louis H. (Barbara) Weiland; three children, Karen, Ray (Christine) and John (Patricia) Berntsen; four grandchildren, Ray (Bpuu), Laura, Francisco, and Emiliano Berntsen, and two great grandchildren, Ray and Ottilia Berntsen.

Her life reflects the history of her generation. She grew up during the Depression in the small farming town of Ethan, South Dakota. With the outbreak of World War II she moved, at the age of 17, to Seattle to find work at the Port of Embarcation. There she met her handsome Ray, and after the war they married, settled in to a small home, and had a couple of kids. For a few years Mary enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom and devoted housewife.

In 1959 the family moved to Vallejo where Mary had another child and, before long, re-entered the work force. For the next 20 some years she filled the position of secretary in the Medical Education Department of David Grant Hospital at Travis Air Force Base. After retiring from Travis in 1984 she took on part time work at the Vallejo Times Herald and the Vallejo Unified School District. She finally retired completely so that she could take care of Ray, who passed away in 2008.

Since then, until her death, Mary kept a lively schedule. She stayed in daily touch with family, enjoyed the company of friends and neighbors, traveled far and wide, gardened, and got regular exercise at Jazzercise classes at the Vallejo Senior Center. Born the fourth of seven children, she has ever been in the center of things. She is very much loved and will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, March 22, at Twin Chapels Mortuary, 1100 Tennessee St., Vallejo. Inurnment will be private at Sacramento Valley VA National Cemetery, Dixon.
