Helen Genevieve Nelson passed away Tuesday in a local hospital following a brief illness, just months before her 100th birthday. She was born in Leaf Mountain, Minnesota and has lived in Benicia since 1942. She worked as a Teacher in a one-room schoolhouse in Minnesota for several years before coming to California when she married her husband. She spent more than 17 years as an Avon Sales Rep.
Helen was a 50 year member and past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star, a longtime member of the Community Congregational Church, a member of the Benicia PTA for many years and former Voting Precinct worker.
Helen is survived by her children, Ethel Andrews, Roger (Nancy) Nelson and Virginia (Bill) Roberts; sisters Ina Sylvester and Bess Hamilton; brother, Donald Rots; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald G. Nelson in 1990.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 7 at 11 a.m., Monday at Community Congregational Church, 1305 West Second Street. Burial will be private. Family prefers donations to Meals on Wheels or the Community Congregational Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Passalacqua Funeral Chapel.
