Michael Stephen Kirchner of Fairfield passed away Nov. 24. He was born in San Mateo, CA. on Feb.17, 1948 to Edward and Suzanne Kirchner.
His father was a Commander in the Coast Guard and therefore lived in many cities in California, including San Mateo, San Diego, and Fremont, as well as North Carolina and Hawaii.
He graduated from Mission San Jose High School in Fremont and Cal State Hayward. He was a member of the Air Force Reserves and was stationed at Hamilton Air Force Base in Novato as a military police officer, after which he pursued a firefighting career that he achieved in 1976 by joining the Vallejo Fire Dept. and retired after 31 years of dedicated service as Deputy Fire Chief. Mike was a born leader and lived his purposeful life with integrity, honesty and strength of character.
He was a lifelong devotee to the sport of baseball. He volunteered much of his time coaching his son's baseball teams as well as CYO basketball. The love of sports was instilled in him at an early age by his mother, Suzanne and his grandfather, Homer. He had an impressive baseball memorabilia collection. He also cherished a picture he had of his grandfather with Babe Ruth. He loved working with wood and was an accomplished carpenter, electrician, plumber, and landscaper, much of which kept him busy after retirement. He was the most inquisitive person and seeker of knowledge and was always reading on various topics, many of which included historical information, and biographies of famous people.
He is survived by his wife, Candice (Cloudeane) Kirchner of 41 years; his daughter, Holly Kirchner and son, Ian Kirchner, both of Fairfield, CA.; his father, Edward Kirchner of Portland, Oregon; sisters, Leanora Kirchner of Palm Desert, CA., and Samantha Fulaytor of Warner Robins, GA; brother, Anthony Kirchner of Las Vegas, NV, as well as many other loving family members.
Visitation beginning at 10 a.m. with services following at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at Tulocay Funeral Home, 411 Coombsville Road, Napa, CA 94559.
