Donald R. Bragg, DDS, a well-known dentist and civic leader, died January 1, 2013, at the age of 96 from complications related to a long illness.
Donald was born Aug. 4, 1916, in San Francisco, the son of Marguerite C. and Roy C. Bragg. The family moved to Vallejo in 1920, when Donald's father became associated with the old Vallejo Electric Light and Power Company. Donald graduated from Vallejo High School and Sacramento Junior College and earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from San Francisco's College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1942. He practiced dentistry in Vallejo for more than 55 years.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy for six years, and saw combat duty aboard the cruiser "USS Reno" in the South Pacific. He retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve with the rank of lieutenant commander.
During his career he served on the Board of Directors of the California Dental Association, as president of the Napa Solano Dental Society, as president of Physicians & Surgeons Alumni Association, and Fellow of the International College of Dentists. Donald served as president of the Family Service Agency of United Way and as president of the Vallejo Rotary Club; additionally, he was a member of the B.P.O.E. Donald also served as part time MAS Director of the Napa State Hospital and was the first "in-house" dentist of the Solano County Jail.
Donald is survived by his wife of 68 years, Gloria Bragg of Vallejo; and his two daughters, Donna Rose and Cathy Higgins (Dan) of Vacaville. He is also survived by his sister, Gloria McAdams of Vallejo; four grandchildren, Kevin Rose (Megan) of Napa, Alison Rose, Patrick Higgins and Laura Higgins of Vacaville; two great-grandchildren, Sydney and Piper; and nephews and nieces, Jeffrey McAdams, DDS, Mark McAdams, OD, Marily Mora and Kristin Kwitek (Marty). Additionally, Donald leaves his great friends, his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Diana and Bob Logan of San Mateo, and their loving family.
Special appreciation goes to Donald's long time care giver Delia, along with Lourdes and Violetta.
