Frank J. "Bud" Smith, 95, passed away Monday in a local hospital following a long illness. He was a native and lifelong resident of Vallejo. Bud drove a Bread Truck for Langendorf Bakery for almost 40 years. After retirement he worked for Vallejo Stationers.
Bud graduated from Vallejo High School in 1936 where he played basketball, football and ran track. He was also Student Body President his senior year. After graduation he was awarded a basketball scholarship to Marin Junior College and St. Mary's College in Moraga.
Bud was a volunteer coach at St. Basil's School for over 25 years. As a bread truck driver, he was off work on Wednesdays and Sundays so for many years, Bud worked as a volunteer PE teacher at St. Basil's on his day off from driving the truck. He was also very instrumental in bringing Little League Baseball to Vallejo and also coached in the baseball program for many years.
Bud is survived by his children, Marilyn (Roger) Ifland of Vallejo, Ron (Brenda) Smith of Alabama, Dennis (Catherine) Smith of Santa Barbara and Craig Smith of Lake Tahoe; grandchildren, Jeremiah Smith, Tracy (Tremayne) Tucker, Michelle (Jauann) Fleig, Kris (Terasa) Fleig, Ronnie Smith Jr. and Erin Sansom; and 11 great grandchildren. Bud was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyne, his son, Richard Michael Smith and his sister, Ramona Lyon.
Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Friday, vigil service will be held 7 p.m., at Twin Chapels Mortuary. Mass of Christian burial will be held 9 a.m., Saturday at St. Vincent's Church, followed by burial in All Souls Cemetery. Family prefers donations to Leukemia Lymphoma Society.
