William "Bill" Gallagher, 84, died Nov. 26 in Vallejo of natural causes.
Bill was born to Joseph and Ada Gallagher in Napa. He moved to Vallejo with his mother and older brother and sister when he was eight. He graduated from Vallejo High in 1948. While in high school he competed with the track team and won several awards including the North Coast Section broadjump in 1947. He was the Vallejo High record holder in broadjump at 23'1/2'', a record which stood for many years.
He then was on the San Jose State track team until he served in the Navy during the Korean War on the aircraft carrier USS Princeton. Upon discharge in 1955 he returned to San Jose State and earned his BS in Electrical Engineering.
After graduation in 1959 he worked as an electronics engineer in the aerospace industry for 7 years. While working at Philco Palo Alto he helped design the Courier 1B communication satellite, which is now in the Smithsonian. In 1967 he moved back to Vallejo to start working at Mare Island for Naval Electronics Systems Engineering Center (NAVELEX). He retired in 1989 as a department head in the Navigational Aids division.
He was an avid whitewater rafter and introduced the sport to scores of his co-workers and other friends. They rafted most of the navigable rivers in the West, including two trips down the Colorado with his non-commercial group.
Bill's other interests and activities included computer programming, photography, gardening, reading, and playing poker. He especially enjoyed time and activities with his family. He was well-known for his repertoire of jokes. He was a member of Elks Lodge #559, SIRS and NARFE.
Bill was predeceased by his parents and his siblings, Betty and Raymond. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy; brother, Burr Bullock of Paradise; sister, Burrdyne Perry of Orangevale; children, Bill (Cathy), Brian (Marcell), and Bob (Tammy). He was the loving grandfather of Alison, Kimberly, Timothy, Lindsey, Grant and Justin Gallagher.
