Helene Zurad Obituary

Nov. 27, 2012

Helene J. Zurad, 90, of Winchester Park, Philadelphia, and recently Methodist Manor, Tunkhannock, died Nov. 27, 2012, in Tyler Hospital ICU, Tunkhannock.

She was born on 2/22/22 in the Kensington section of Philadelphia to Polish immigrants, the late Jan and Marie (Kelbon) Misiak. She married her love, Joseph Zurad, on May 3, 1941. They raised their family together on Charles Street and Lenola Street, Philadelphia, until his death on May 2, 1987.

Taking care of her home and her family, and later others, was her calling. She enjoyed cleaning, ironing, reading, sewing, crocheting, crabbing, gardening, cooking and baking. She enjoyed trips to the Poconos and the Jersey Shore, and loved to eat, especially Polish food, seafood and soups. She was an extreme couponer before its time. "Always get a bargain" was her way of life. She was never at a loss for words!

Helene attended Hunter School, Philadelphia. She was a longtime member of St Bartholomew and St. Jerome parishes, Philadelphia. She cooked meals for Food for Friends and crocheted for those in nursing homes. She was a foster mother in her early years.

She is survived by her four children and spouses, Joan Little-Brock and Tom, Park City, Utah; Joe and Kathy, Ocean Isle, N.C.; Ed and Patti, Shavertown; and Bob and Diane, Worcester, Pa. She has 10 grandchildren, Bob Little, Jennifer (Nate) Snyder; Melanie (Ryan Felts), Ariel; Noah, Abbey and Olivia Zurad; Amanda, Crysta and Bobby Zurad. Her three great-grandchildren are Maddi and Lauren Snyder, and Christopher Felts. Also surviving is her brother Frank Misiak, Columbus, Ga. She was preceded in death by a brother, Edward.

Her funeral Mass will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at St Therese's Church, 64 Davis St., Shavertown, with Rev. Jim Paisley officiating. Visitation with the family will be held at the church 1 hour before Mass.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army or Tunkhannock Community Ambulance Association, PO Box 322, Tunkhannock, PA 18657.

So glad we got to visit with you last weekend and glad you got to enjoy a turkey dinner on Thanksgiving (although it was hospital food). I envy your energy and quick mind- it is still hard to believe you were a 90 year old. Rest in Peace!
