Elsie Lowrie Darling

■Elsie Lowrie Darling, 97, formerly of Wilkes-Barre, passed away in Santa Rosa, Calif., on March 8, 2012.

Born on March 27, 1914 in Wilkes-Barre, Elsie's elementary education was at the Wilkes-Barre Institute. She attended Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, Conn. from 1929 to 1932. She attended Vassar College from 1932 to 1936 and the University of Chicago in 1939. She enrolled in Columbia University Teacher's College in 1943 and received a master's degree from the Teacher's College in 1945.

She taught nursery school in New York City. In 1945, she moved to Seattle and taught early childhood as well as first and third grade at the University of Washington. In 1963, Elsie moved to Palo Alto, Calif. There, she taught at the Ravenswood City School District in East Palo Alto, Calif., until 1977, when she retired.

Elsie was in life partnership with Vincent Salmon from 1978 until June 2011, when Vincent died. Elsie and Vincent were married on July 3, 2004. She traveled extensively, loved music and singing and was active in the Sierra Club and the Elder Women's League.

Elsie moved to The Friends House in Santa Rosa in approximately 2000. She died in Santa Rosa on March 8, 2012, three weeks shy of her 98th birthday.

She is survived by her niece, Dorothy Darling, and her two step-daughters, Margaret Goodman and Jean Salmon.
