Dec. 7, 2012
Harry went to be with Jesus peacefully on Dec. 7, 2012, in Spokane, Wash.
He was surrounded by his family who thought of him as a fun-loving, generous and caring man whose love for Jesus, his Savior, was evident to all.
In his 84 years of life he was a faithful servant of God, a loving husband, father, brother and grandpa. He loved old westerns, Andy Griffith, football, peanut butter and Snoopy. He was a jokester at heart and always had a joke ready. He was a friend to everyone and had a way of making anyone feel like family. Harry was born in Wilkes-Barre on Oct. 2, 1928, to John and Mary Gonos. He married Barbara Kronberg in Fayetteville, N.C., in the late 1940s and they raised four children, Jimmy, Kathy, Ingrid and Michael. He served his country as a member of the 82nd Airborne and retired in 1967 after serving in the Army for more than 20 years. After his first wife passed away, he married Jeanne (Rowlands) Gruver on Sept. 25, 1995. He lived and spread his love for life in many places but lived the longest in Glendale, Ariz., moving there in the late 1970s and remaining there until 2009, when he moved to Spokane to be near his family.
He is survived by many who loved and enjoyed the many things about him that endeared him to all. They include his sisters, Dolores Gonos, Maryann Kotch, Patricia Flannery; his children, son, Jimmy Atkinson, and his wife, Bonnie; daughters, Kathy Wurz, and her daughters, Jenny, who married Scott Hurd, and their children, Kayla, Kody, Jake, Katie, Emily, Noah, and Seth; Pam, who married Donnie Johnson and their sons, Silas and Samuel; Beth Wurz and her daughter, Faith; daughter Ingrid Moran and her daughter, Jamie Lynn, who married Richard Orr, and their children, Tatum and Hannah; son, Michael Gonos; stepdaughter, Jackie, her husband, O. Crosby Sparks, and their son, Travis, and his wife, Jennifer; stepdaughter, Jo Ann, her husband, Kenny Mateyu, and their daughter, Heather, who married David Phillips, and their children, Josh, Jeffrey and Jaeson; stepson, Jeff Gruver, and his daughter, Jeanna, along with her daughter, Ahmahz.
In lieu of flowers his family is asking that donations are made in his memory to Liferoads Church, 4209 E. Pacific Ave, Spokane, WA. 99202, where you would find Harry working as a greeter most Sundays. His family would also like to say thank you to all the staff at Horizon Hospice for how they serve our community and a special thanks to Dr. Jason Heffernan, Marsha, Jennifer, Janet, Ray and Mike for sharing in Harry's life with us. We appreciate all of you so much.
He will be laid to rest on Saturday at Riverside Memorial Park, 508 N. Government Way at 1 p.m. during a Graveside Service. There will be a celebration of life service at Liferoads Church, 4209 E. Pacific Ave. Saturday, 6 p.m. Heritage Funeral Home, Spokane, Wash., is entrusted with arrangements.
