DALLAS — Sister Mary Ancilla Kasarda, RSM, a member of the Mid-Atlantic Community of the Sisters of Mercy, died at Mercy Center, Dallas, on Thursday, May 8, 2014.
Baptized as Margaret, she was born Aug. 19, 1917, in Treskow to John and Mary Johnson Kasarda.
Sister Ancilla graduated from St. Mary's High School in Wilkes-Barre and received a degree in elementary education at Misericordia University in Dallas. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on Sept. 8, 1937, and professed her vows on March 12, 1940.
Sister Ancilla taught in the Dioceses of Scranton; Brooklyn, New York; Harrisburg; Rockville Center, New York; and Altoona-Johnstown. Upon completion of her teaching ministry she was the receptionist and secretary for the Mercy Center Pre-K School. Until just recently, Sister Ancilla continued to live her vow of service by frequently visiting the sick in area hospitals.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Mary, Anna, Helen, Catherine, Dolores; brothers, John, Steven, Joseph, Francis, Anthony.
She is survived by her sister, Marcella; nieces and nephews; and the Sisters of Mercy.
Transferal to Mercy Center, Dallas, will be Monday with a wake service and viewing from 2 to 4 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday followed by interment in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton.
