Mary (Banks) Yelland

Mary Banks Yelland, 92, a resident of Wilkes-Barre, died Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at her home after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Yelland was born in Wilkes-Barre, daughter of the late Fred and Lucy Simon Neuman, and attended the city schools. She was married to Thomas Banks from 1946 until his death in 1965, and later married a longtime friend, Edward Yelland, in 1966. They were married until his death in 1996.

Mrs. Yelland was very active with her husband in the Wilkes-Barre Corps of the Salvation Army, together serving more than 75 years as volunteer workers. Edward was honored for his service on the Christmas kettles while Mary served 33 years as a volunteer in many capacities, retiring in 2005 due to ill health.

She was one of the most wonderful mothers to ever raise three kids and will be missed and cherished for a lifetime by her son John, who cared for her for the past five years and her daughter, Luci, who was John's supporting force.

She has a host of family and friends who will miss her and her caring heart.

In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by brothers, Emil and Arthur.

Surviving are her sons, George E. Banks, Wilkes-Barre, and John Banks, at home; daughter, Luci Paparelli, Wilkes-Barre; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family from the H. Merritt Hughes Funeral Home Inc., a Golden Rule Funeral Home, 451 N. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, with Lt. Ted Tressler, commanding officer, Wilkes-Barre Salvation Army Corps, officiating. Interment will be in Orcutt Cemetery, Noxen. There will be no public viewing or service.
