Dr. Raymond L. Detz

Dr. Raymond L. Detz, 85, of Old Newport St., Sheatown section, Newport Township, passed away early Tuesday morning, Jan. 1, 2013, at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, following a brief illness.

Born on Feb. 27, 1927, in Nanticoke he was a son of the late Lawrence (Bob) and Mary Markiewicz Detz. He was a graduate of the former Newport Township High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in his senior year serving at the end of World War II. After his discharge from the military, he enrolled at Mansfield State College and received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1950. He then earned a Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Temple Dental School, Philadelphia, in 1954.

After graduating from dental school he temporarily worked at Hahnemann University Hospital Dental Clinic, Philadelphia, until opening his office in Ashley. He practiced there until his retirement in 1997.

Dr. Detz was a life member of the Luzerne County Dental Society and Third District Dental Society. He served two terms on the board of directors of the former Retreat State Hospital before its closing. He also was on the dental staff at Mercy for a number of years and the dental clinic.

He was a member of St. Faustina Kowalska Parish, Nanticoke, and was a member of Holy Child Church, Sheatown, until its closing and belonged to the Holy Name Society. Earlier in life he was a member of Holy Rosary Church, Ashley.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Albina.

Surviving is his wife of 56 years, the former Mary Ellen Kovalchik; four children, sons, Raymond Detz Jr. and his wife, Anne Marie, Wilkes-Barre, and Robert Detz, Greencastle, Pa.; daughters, Marie Mecca and her husband, Thomas, Moosic, and Jean O'Malley and her husband, William, Dallas; grandchildren, Thomas and Christina Mecca and William and Colleen O'Malley.

Funeral services will begin Friday at 10:30 a.m. from Davis-Dinelli Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad St., Nanticoke with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Faustina Kowalska Parish / Holy Trinity Church, 520 S. Hanover St., Nanticoke, with the Rev. James Nash as celebrant. Interment will follow in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Sheatown. Visitation will be today from 2 until 4 p.m. and 6 until 8 p.m.
